We decided to stop in as we had some time to kill and were amazed at what we learned and saw! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and extremely interested in the subject, which added to our experience. It is neat to see the buildings restored and yet the insides left as it was in days past. Highly recommend a stop at this unique museum! The entrance fee is minimal.
This was the last of a few historic places to visit on our trip to Madison. The guy that did the tour did an excellent job and seeing the history that place had was great. Many of the old machines are still there and you can almost hear them as you walk in.
Our Girl Scout troop of 8th-11th graders really enjoyed this tour. Lots of very interesting stories about the Factory and the history of Madison.
This little museum is a wonderful picture of the hard working people our country was built on. The tour guide was very well informed and made the place come alive with its history. If visiting Madison take time to see this.
Very knowledgeable docent who was engaging and helpful about other attractions. Highly recommend this tour!
My husband and I visited this Museum today and loved it. If you're interested in horses and saddles or just like old woodworking equipment or local history, this is a great place. The shops look like the workers just left. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. There are other interesting stops in Historic Madison nearby that make for a full day right in town.
Visiting this little factory in Madison, Indiana, is like stepping back in time. Most of the tools, equipment, templates, and some of the pieces the factory produced have been preserved. The excellent tour guide answered our many questions while taking us through the buildings explaining how saddletrees were made, where they were sold, along with the decline of the business. Really unique & interesting place to visit.
Fascinating facility but extremely limited open hours makes it hard to schedule a visit. I understand the constraints of personnel and volunteers but a site of this quality deserves better access.
If you have any interest in mechanical things, history or woodworking, you will love it. It is fascinating & our tour guide was particularly knowlegeable.
Came to Madison to enjoy the history but it was closed. Publicity said it was open. What more can I say?
Was really informative. Great learning experience of days gone by. The guides were friendly and personal. Was a fascinating experience
The buildings are all original as is all the equipment. Factory was owned by one family from 1878 until 1972. Very good tour.
Great tour guide. Much more interesting than it sounds!
Historic Madison, Inc. has restored many of the unique and beautiful historic properties in Madison, Indiana. Though the Lanier mansion is by far the most visited, a trip to the marvelous historic town should include these other properties as well. I had no idea what a saddletree even was when I stumbled upon this historic site, but thanks to a great restoration and a very informative guide, learned the fascinating history of of making saddletrees and the huge role played by this simple little factory on the Ohio river. If you enjoy learning about craftsmanship and how making the heart of a saddle is significant, then take the time and add this little bit of history to your schedule. It is in the historic district of Madison by a quiet little stream and is worth a stop. HMI sells combo tickets that let you visit their properties for one very low price.
