If American History is your thing and you want the background on how the Moument came about, this is a definite stop you need to make.
It is worth taking in this museum along with your visit to Mt. Rushmore. There are groups of exhibits pertaining to the sculpture, Gutzon Borglum, and each exhibit is narrated to you with the use of personal audio guide player which is a very convenient. You can view the displays and listen to the narrations at your own pace. You can have a narration repeated if you feel that you did not catch everything the first time. There is a wonderful film you need to view. The exhibits and film cover the life and works of Mr. Borglum, and the creation of Mt. Rushmore. The visit to this museum gave me a broader understanding and appreciation of Mt. Rushmore.
One can learn a lot about the making of Mount Rushmore, the history behind it and the vision of the sculptor Gutzon Borglum in spear-heading this homage to four great men in American History.
They should have more variety in the statues and figures they sell. For example, the Lincoln in the bench statue, the size the sell is too big. I'm sure that if the reduce the size, the will sell a lot more.
This museum is about the life of the sculptor of Mount Rushmore. It details his life and there are numerous displays of his earlier works. it is an interesting perspective on the man and his relationship with various presidents. It is a good to see this first, then drive on to Mount Rushmore.Parking is available. There is some near the store fronts and museum entrance. There is also an unattended pay lot, if all the other spots are taken. It is $10 per person. This includes a self-guided audio tour complete w/headset. If you really look at all the items and listen to each section. You can plan on a good hour. No photography is allowed inside. There is a great bronze sculpture of President Lincoln on a bench just outside the entrance. This is a great photo op!
i wouldn't go out of your way to go here tells a story, however If this is your plan for the day it only takes 15 minutes even if you read everything
Before my family even got inside, a staff member came out to our car to rudely tell us we were parked incorrectly. We then witnessed another staff member tell someone with a handicapped passenger they couldn't drop him off by the door and to move their car. We definitely weren't going to give these creeps a dime! Two decades ago this was the best museum in the hills. Now it is run down and desperate. Even the building's exterior hasn't been kept up. (Nevermind that Borglum was a member of the KKK, according to many online sources...)
In my opinion you can find out more about this man on the internet, and certainly you can find out more about the men who helped him with this project.
Tells you the story of how and why Mt. Rushmore was created. Makes you really appreciate the monument alot more.
It was great to read about Mr. Borglum and how he came to building the monument. The museum was very cool and I learned alot.
Need to go and see this if you are going to Mount Rushmore. Makes seeing Mount Rushmore all the more beautiful and really something to remember. Must see!!!!
I was blown away by the other things he sculpted, many of which are on display here. I loved reading about the history of his life as well as the monument. The film is excellent and gets you psyched about seeing the monument.
