The Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge is a perfect place to enjoy a day relaxing in nature. First, the place is absolutely huge, it covers several square miles of pine forests, hills and small lakes. There is a nice but really small visitors center, but the main attraction here is getting out and enjoying mile after mile of undeveloped land. Get a handy map at the visitors center, or at the display board if the center is closed, then start exploring. There are several nice hiking trails and roads to explore. There are a few four wheel drive type roads if you have one, but most of the roads are easy to travel with a car. I particularly enjoy the small lakes and the photo blinds that are set up allowing me to spend hours taking water fowl photos. There are no services at the refuge to plan on bringing a picnic lunch and something to drink. Or enjoy the day at the refuge then head over to McLeod Farms for some dinner and ice cream.
we visit the refuge every year on the first and third weekends in November for the three day deer hunt they provide. We've seen a lot but never had the chance for the perfect kill but it is still a great place to visit & enjoy the outdoors like we do. We continue to go every year until they stop us.
Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge is an outstanding place for your family to spend a day. The area has excellent hiking and biking trails which allow for the observation of various wildlife, including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. If you want to teach you children or grandchildren how to fish there is no better place then Oxpen Lake which is designated for youth fishing only. All in all, it is a great place for a family day.
