forty acre rock

Forty Acre Rock is an out of the way "park" located at a large rock outcropping. There aren't any services at the park and it is fairly remote so plan on bringing everything you need with you and packing it out when you leave. The main feature of the park is that the huge stone outcropping juts out from the surrounding sand hills creating a unique environment for plant and animals. There are a variety of tiny plants and lichens that are found only at 40 acre rock. The lichens "bloom" after a rain causing multi colored rings and patterns on the top of the rock. It's fun to walk around the top of the rock, but be aware there is a sheer drop around most of the edge and there are no guard rails so this may not be the best place to bring young children. It's also fun to hike round the rock and enjoy several small craggy caves and springs that flow out from the rock. In short a great place for a short hike or to take wonderful photos.
