The Northwind Arts Center has moved into its new location in the Waterman & Katz Building, 701 Water Street and opened with a blockbuster of a show, Small Expressions '13. Any time you are in PT it is definitely worth stopping in. The monthly shows are a mix of juried exhibitions and featured artists. The range and quality of the work is stunning. This community art gallery has both monthly shows in its main gallery and an on-going sales gallery, called the Showcase, for local artists—the Showcase is closed until February 2015 when it will open in the rear of the new space with more options for renting and buying locally crafted art. Port Townsend is a major literary arts center being the home of Copper Canyon Press and the Centrum Writer's Conference. Northwind supports the many writers and poets in town with an evening reading series on the second and fourth Thursday of most months. In its new venue, Northwind is sponsoring a monthly Songwriters' Circle featuring some of the many talented singers and composers on the Olympic Peninsula.
What a difference 2 years makes. Northwind Arts Center is now in the middle of a capital campaign which, if successful, will make them the proud owners of a high-profile downtown location. This beautiful, historic building is a real step up and along with the hiring of a new, young Director, has a lot of people in town energized and ready to take Northwind Gallery to the next level. Still a great spot to see local and regional art and artists, but the new gallery will also be an excellent setting for Northwind's twice a month poetry readings and perhaps small musical events. Good Luck to all involved.
I visited the Northwind Art Center in Port Townsend WA, for one of their shows and was pleasantly surprised at the very high quality of the art work in the show, plus it was free! I had expected there to be good work, but not superior works, some pieces even stunning me. I highly recommend buying art from and attending shows at the Northwind Art Center to anyone who is interested in viewing art, has an established art collection, or is starting a new art collection. Fantastic Northwind, keep up the great work.
This community art gallery has both monthly shows in its main gallery and an on-going sales gallery, called the Showcase, for local artists. It is about one-half mile west of the main downtown section of Port Townsend, but it is well-worth seeking it out—or stopping there on the way into town. This is a great little art gallery in the wonderful Victorian seaport town of Port Townsend, WA. It is a very nice place that shows the best work of the local artisans.
This art gallery has monthly shows, some juried and some invitaional artists...all worth a stop to wander through this quiet and often awe-inspiring gallery to appreciate the talent and beauty on display in this unique and friendly town of Port Townsend! Judy D.
The quality of the art displayed here is impressive -- especially when you consider the size of the town and the fact that this place is staffed by volunteers. Not only do they have the art but they have artist talks and readings.Port Townsend itself has the "First Saturday Gallery Walks" where all the galleries, including Northwind, open their doors in the late afternoon & early evening on the First Saturday of every month.I have only found the staff at Northwind to be helpful and excited about sharing.
Sweet little gallery -- a bit off the beaten path of PT's main shopping area, but worth the effort. Art changes out every month so worth a stop whenever you visit.I like the fact it's a non-profit, supported by the local comunity type of venue.
Northwind Arts Center has two parts...one is a juried show that includes a wide range of fabulous artists from the region. The other is a Showcase Gallery of area artists who have assigned wall or floor space. BOTH are really fine and definitely worth seeing on a trip into Port Townsend. The Gallery is just south of the main part of the town. If you're driving in, it's on the right near the Kitsap Bank. If you're coming from the ferry, it's a short walk south (turn left coming out of ferry area).
This is the best gallery in town: find it on your right past the boatyard driving in to town, and STOP if it is open: Thursday - Monday noon - 5pm. Staffed by volunteers, the main gallery exhibit changes monthly, and features regional artists either by a juried event or special invitation. The rental gallery features 15 or so local artists, with works changing often. Excellent quality, and good variety.
