Hike down to the beach, wander through wooded trails or grassy fields. Look down the throat of the 10" cannons at Ft Casey. Or sit with binoculars at the edge of the bluff to watch for whales in the straights. What ever you do, the views just keep going! The beach is a bit rocky but it's quiet. My whole family enjoyed the afternoon there.
We love this park, especially because we can walk to it. LOTS of different hiking trails through woods as well as a great trail along the bluff. Also has camping and picnic areas. Some of the trails are OK for bicycles--the Kettles trail is our favorite for biking. No fee if you walk or bike into the park. If you drive, a pass is required (recommend getting the $30 annual Discover pass good at all WA state parks vs. the $10 daily fee).
Make sure to climb on them and go to the light house on the top of the mountain. You can easily spend 1-2 hours there with kids.
The view from the park would not quit. I just wish that there was someone there to talk about the history of the place.
Fort Ebey has the scenery as the other fort state parks in the area (Casey, Worden, and Flagler), but it has a lot less fort to it. It is still a great place to get away and have some fun. There are plenty of trails to explore and the fort is fun too. The main trail is the Bluff trail and I believe that is the one that connects to Ebey's Landing. Lake Pondilla is small and the trail to it is very short. The fort itself is very small, but it has one good walkway and flashlights are not required unless you really want to explore the rooms. Fort Casey down the road has a lot more fort to it if that is your thing. Like Ebey's Landing down the road, the scenery is spectacular and there is beach access which is always fun. If you want a quieter version of Fort Casey, Fort Ebey is the place to go.
The best part of Fort Ebey is that is on a high bluff that overlooks the Puget Sound. There's a long trail that goes along the top of the ridge that is a joy to hike on. The camping facilities at the park are great. There's a large group camp site on the southern end of the park. Beach access and lots of open places for kids to run.
This is a wonderful, historic park right on the water. It has great hiking trails, water front walks and beautiful views.
Loved the sights, we stayed in an RV at the State Park. Very nice, clean park. My only complaint would be how dark it is. The sites have very little sunlight as they are in a very wooded area. But overall, beautiful park and wonderful hiking trails!
Don't expect to see the same kind of military history at this site. Fort Casey is much more interesting. However, Ebey battery and beach do provide a nice perspective out to the open water of the Pacific. We didn't hike many of the trails, but it looks like a great place to take the bikes some other time.
With 5 kids and 8 adults, we had a big group to keep busy, and Fort Ebey was perfect! Suggest you try for a sunny day to enjoy the GORGEOUS views and fun beach. Bald eagles flying all around. The kids and adults loved the rocks, kelp and tide at the beach. Little ones cannot get to the water due to the big rocks, but these are fun for big kids. We packed and enjoyed our lunch on the battery overlook, with its amazing views and walking trails all around the cool deserted WWII fortifications. A must see!
This is such a beautiful place. We found a table high on the bluff with panoramic views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The battery is fun to explore, and there are trails along the bluff and down by the water. Even when other people are nearby this is a peaceful place.
The parks are all worth stopping at. Very informative on the history of Fort Ebey. We were with friends and drove through it. Would go back again.
If you don't have time for a long hike on Whidbey, don't miss the chance to at least see the gorgeous scenery from the bluff trail at Fort Ebey State Park. Instead of starting down below in the prairie at Ebey's Landing Reserve, drive a little further up Hwy 20 to the state park entrance (north of the reserve). Follow the signs to the gun battery (right) and park in that lot. The bluff trail starts to the left of the first battery. This narrow, cliff-edge trail has beautiful views of the straight and the Olympic mountains. One of our absolute favorite spots on the whole island!
Take the bluff trail, offering you views to the St. of Juan de Fuca.Find the perfectly positioned bench, silence your inner voices and listen as the bell buoy tolls...for you
Fort Ebey State Park is NOT one of my favorites. It is always foggy, rainy in the morning, cold, and every time I've been there, there's been a burn ban. There's pretty sunsets and lots of cool trails to hike on but other than that- that's about it.
