Bring lots of water, this is an exposed hike in sections...take the hike from Devils Postpile to the falls..then loop out to Reds Meadow. Good hike at altitude...Best way to get there is take the Reds Meadow shuttle bus from the Mammoth Mountain Adventure CenterAlso take the wildflower loop hike as well...it is also a shuttle stop before you get to the Devils Postpile stop

We hiked from the shuttle bus stop and then on to Rainbow Falls. It was delightful all the way and very varied. met lots of nice people and saw this very unusual rock formation. One tip - get the bus ticket at the same time as the ticket for the Gondola and its a bit cheaper. We only found this out by chance.

Crazy pile of long grand angular rocks that looked as though a giant was building a fort and cast away their extra stone logs. Really cool.

We made the hike (approx 3 miles from Rainbow Falls) to Devil's Postpile NM. I kept commenting how it should be right around the comer anytime time now. The hike is not for persons with disabilities or in a wheelchair, although there was a shorter route from the other direction, which was much shorter and less strenuous. And there is was.......gorgeous........I stood with my mouth wide open, reeling in the natural beauty of this ancient monument. It truly was something I had never seen before. Preservation of other-worldly natural formations like this are essential so that generations from now we can still appreciate their presence. Highly recommend a visit here.

Paid a visit to Devil's Postpile while staying overnight in Mammoth Lakes. Interesting rock formations that were reminiscent of the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. Plus nice scenery on the short walk to it. Worth seeing.

Traffic is limited in this area, which is a good thing as it would become overwhelmed and lose its natural beauty otherwise. It's worth the extra hike to Rainbow Falls.

This was an easy hike and worth taking in the Mammoth Lakes area. For me it was a tad difficult to appreciate after seeing the basalt prisms in Hidalgo, Mexico just a few months prior --but still worth hiking to. Rainbow Falls was also worth trekking to once we were on the path. The visitor's center at the base of the location had some interesting items. Uneven footing abounds on this hike, so take children by the hand on this one. Enjoy~!

We walked to the Devil's post pile and really enjoyed it. What a wonderful natural feature!Nothing to dislike!

Devil's Postpile is a MUST see when you are in the Mammoth Lakes area. It's a natural rock formation not repeated many places in the world. Even though the day was wet and rainy, we had a great time on the short hike to and from the sight. Go and see it.

This is so worth a visit. I have been to the US on three occasions now and our visit to Mammoth Lake is one of the most memorable experiences. The trip to the Devil's postpile was really interesting and while you are in the area for very little effort it is worth going to rainbow falls as well

Devils Postpile National Monument and surrounding area is a very nice place with a lot of beautiful hiking trails. It is a gorgeous area.

Actually there isn't anything devilish about it. It a reasonable hike. I.e., you don't need to be a triathlete to make it. Once you're at the top, well its just glorious. You will not regret it and remember it forever.

I had just visited the Postpile a couple of years ago. I had hiked to the waterfall. This time I only wanted to hike to the top of the postpile. The trail starts at the parking lot. It's only about 1/4 mile to the Postpile. You can then go up stairs to the top and then loop back down again. That adds maybe another 1/4 mile to your hike.Fall turned out to be a great time to visit. The crowds were gone, you don't have to take the bus. And there's also a respectable show of fall colors on the way in. Here are photos of that hike:

This is an excellent hike. If going to Devil's Postpile it's relatively short, less than a 1/2 mile each way. You can continue on to Rainbow Falls which is also worthwhile, albeit a longer hike, 2.5 miles each way. Be sure to dress in layers in the Fall and Spring, and take sufficient water and a trail snack for the inevitable break you will take. Realize you are on part of the Pacific Crest Trail, something most Californians miss out on visiting. If you are into the outdoors and/or geology, this is like going to church. We saw a group of deer grazing and a trout in the small stream you cross on the trail. There are some ups and downs on the trail so you should be in at least fair condition especially if you are from a lower eleavation (e.g. the valley).

A lovely place to hike, picnic, and take pictures for all ability levels! The waterfall is gorgeous, of course! The whole setting is pretty...a great place to spend the day!
