we stopped by after lunch and really enjoyed our time. there are great items and curios to look at while sampling the wines. The wine tasting was almost all red wine, which I don't like, so my friend enjoyed the wines and I got the cider tasting. The cider is quite good and the Cool Cat is good for just drinking and for mimosas - nice, light, and bubbly.
This was my second time visiting Witch Creek's tasting room in Julian. This visit I took my husband, and we tasted several different wines, The tasting room is humorously put together with several 'Wizard of Oz' type items scattered about the walls and ceiling. We have been wine tasting for many years, and seldom do we find an A plus pourer who is so young. Dustin is the son of the owner, and he knows his wines, their origins, the climate and the vinting. We were impressed by his enthusiasm, and the terrific amount of knowledge this young man could impart. We were able to have a lively, informative conversation, and thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent there. The wines are good, well crafted and not pricey. I look forward to my next visit!
Whenever I am in Julian, I stop at this Winery. Becky greets you like your an old friend-and if you have EVER been in there before, she remembers you! She sizes you up quickly, checks with what kind of wines you like and then steers you to where you need to be. The wines are not over priced and wonderful!
This is a tasting room located in central historic Julian. It begins with the whimsical 'the witch is in/out', signs and follows the witch and cat theme through with a terrific array of 'witchy' paraphernalia on the walls and hung from the ceiling- who can miss the broom? The young man pouring was knowledgable and entertaining- my daughter and I learned a lot about the wines and the areas they came from. He was able to answer our questions well and thoroughly. The wines were well crafted, and nicely affordable. I definitely recommend dropping in to this charmingly be'witched' place for some good wine and a well versed wine pourer who made the time extremely enjoyable and well worth the time spent there!
The lady that works there is very rude to people unless you are her drunk friend or a club member. The whole time she spent catering to her very drunk friend plying them with full glasses of wine and I watched them walk in and I watched them leave and they never paid a cent and they were given full glasses of wine to "taste". There was also a couple of questionable age who said they were club members, yet never showed proof and she was plying them with alcohol too. She never asked them for ID, they looked like they were 17. Meanwhile, all while this is going on, we are left hanging. She told us there was a tasting charge, and then went off to tend to her friends. I think she thought we would walk out. She then proceeded to pour the smallest tastes ever, like a tablespoon. Never explained the wine, was pissed off that we were taking away from her drunk friends. She got really pissed off when I told her who I was, then she went on the defensive, making it like it was my fault and as if I deceived her. Too bad because I really like Witch Creek, but because I was basically treated like crap. I am no longer going to recommend this wine to any of the restaurants or hotels I work with.
It was only five dollars a person (without glass)-11 dollars with the glass for 5 or 6 tastings (I can't remember). The last one we got to pick which dessert wine we wanted to try. We enjoyed every single one we tried, which isn't always the cast in San Diego county. The quirky owners are friendly and fun to listen to. I loved their wall of pet pictures (mostly cats like on the bottle). They accept any pet picture sent or given to them and post it on the wall. While it's mostly felines, they also have dogs and even a cow (named Sirloin). They offer military discounts on the wine, and you also get a 10% discount if you did the tasting. It was a simple fun experience with surprisingly fantastic wine. We are so glad we stopped by.
I enjoyed the wines here and the staff were fun and welcoming. Decor could stand to be updated a bit.
I have to say... My wife and I love this place. It is cozy (small) but it works. There is plenty of bar space for 15-20 people. The Good Witch, Tammy, is a HOOT!! She is a very gracious hostess and makes everyone, whether a first-time visitor or club member, feel welcome.Oh, and the wine is pretty good too. Compared to many of the other So-Cal wineries, I find the Witch Creek gets a little longer in the barrel before its release.
This is the second time we have visited Witch Creek tasting room at Julian. They have a Apple Cider wine that is AWESOME! It is soooo good. We also enjoyed the pomegranite wine (if you like a nice desert wine). It is right next door to the Gold Rush Hotel where we were staying so we bought a bottle and sat out on the front porch that night looking at the stars drinking some of our apple cider wine. Nice night
This tasting room is a bit hard to find, even though it's on a main street. The sign is pretty faded and non-descript. The shop itself isn't anything special, though some of the pictures and signs are pretty interesting. The server is quite knowledgeable about the wines and the local area. The wines are very good, in some cases, and adequate in others. They were running a special on a wine that they wouldn't let us taste, which seems kind of self-defeating. Seems the owners should trust the tasting room personnel to evaluate the customer standing in front of them and not run the shop by fiat from a distant location.
This winery features original art and lots of photos of cats. A real business family atmosphere...lots of fun!
Tina is wonderful and entertaining.. Go to Julian just to visit with her and taste the wine!
I came here once with a friend in the summer and there was 10 min before closing... So they refused to serve us. We came back this fall and walked by it again and decided to try it again. We walked in and were treated poorly and told we couldn't have a glass of certain wines because we weren't wine club members. We got a glass of mediocre wine and was charged $13. The full bottle was only $18. Want to sample good wine? Try all the other wineries that serve great wine with great service!
We stopped at the tasting room in town, and had a great time tasting and chatting with the gals serving there. They also helped with great tips about where to eat! Wine was also good!
One of the things you MUST do in Julian is visit the Witch Creek tasting room in Julian. They have great wines, and a fun atmosphere. Although WC doesn't have as much atmosphere as the Menghini winery (which is also good, but has very little in the way of red wines), it is part of the Julian experience. Highly recommended.
