It was fun to see the beautiful campus, envision what the hippy days must've been like, and see the many students on the campus – But now they are mainly Asian, very serious looking, and apparently very hard-working judging from the piles of books and patient walking from building to building.
It's a great campus. It starts in downtown Berkeley, but sprawls right up the hills. And there are old, traditional buildings and new hyper-modern ones. There's tons of landscaping and lots of pathways to walk. It's surrounded by classic streets and neighborhoods that folks come from all over the world to see. They have not just an eye clinic, but something akin to an eye hospital, in terms of the scope and scale of the work there. And though I'm not a sports fan, it goes without saying the Cal Bears are famous the world over. UCB created a little thing called Free BSD, (Berkley Software Operating System), an offshoot of Unix similar to Linux, which, incidentally, is the real system underneath the one you see on your Mac. This really is the UC that people mean when they even say UC. This is the home turf of the Regents of the University of California, a government within our government that is larger than some countries, a whole world and power structure that forms a kind of fifth branch of government that no one hardly thinks about, in terms of its implications. It's a place that contributes to the both the peace movement and nuclear weapons, (yes, Livermore-Berkeley Laboratories), to hippies and ultra-geeks, to racial equality and oligarchy. It's a crazy quilt mix of interests, funding, politics and culture. There is no equal to it, for better and for worse. There is no provincial college system on earth that can match UC for sheer power, influence, money, and futuristic work. If the UC system were a country, I'd call UC Berkeley it's Capital. And, if taken as a country by itself, I fell confident it would be one of the world players.
This was, by far, the most unappealing high-status college campus I have ever visited. Yes, it is historic and, yes, they have lots of important researchers there but . . . the homeless population runs rampant over the campus and town, I smelled pot on campus multiple times a day, and the overall mood was somewhat aggressive and unhappy. I pray neither of my children require academic programs offered only here!
I liked every things: Nobel-prize winners photos, science addicted people, science - believed manners, lovely students, lovely staffs, amazing area and Calvisitor free WiFi as well!
On this beautiful campus, you can get an excellent education in science, engineering or the humanities. The Berkeley community is diverse and interesting. There are many good restaurants and theaters near the Berkeley campus.
We were in Berkeley for 1 night after a trip to Yosemite and Napa. Our flight out the next day was from the Oakland Airport. We stayed at the Hotel Shattuck just down the street from the campus. Cal is a beautiful campus with a lot of walking area. I think the students were just returning for the fall semester and there was plenty of foot traffic. Also, lots of restaurant choices in the area. We didn't enter any of the buildings, maybe next time.
The University of California campus is a great place to walk. It's quite beautiful. You should visit the TOWER in the middle of the campus, and maybe the Dow Reading room at the enormousand gorgeous old library.
Made my first-ever visit to the bay area and the Cal campus. Time was pretty limited, but enjoyed exploring the campus for a couple of hours during one of the mornings we were here. Very nice campus with lots of history. Hope to return again one day to take in more.
We enjoyed a nice walk on campus. Architecturally interesting. There are quite a few hills, bring comfortable shoes. Enjoyed the good eating close by as well.
I know is a University but for me that was only a turist to hike inside was amazing !!!..beautiful buildings and little mountains ...we saw a deer, a peacock , and other exotic animals :-)
If you have the grades and the money, I can't imagine a better campus than Cal. You'll get plenty of exercise trekking across the expansive campus and enjoy quality sporting events and concerts. Everything you need is within walking distance (which is good since parking is scarce!) There is definitely a different "vibe" in Berkeley and it's all about being your own individual self and everyone is welcome to this melting pot area. Helped move my friend's daughter into her dorm recently and met a bunch of the students who were all helpful to the new kid.
I spent a beautiful afternoon strolling through the UC Berkeley grounds after attending a conference on campus. It is a wonderful, highly entertaining, and even educational tour, with many beautiful monuments, scenic Bay views, and historical tidbits along the trail. For a few dollars you can ascend the Tower, which I felt was definitely worth the price of admission.
