Wow, this is an amazing collection. With pieces from masters like Rothko, Pollack, Guston, Thiebaud, de Kooning... I could go on, as well as dozens of incredible works from artists who aren't household names. Everything was fantastic, I could have spent all day there. And it's FREE! Don't miss the video on the first floor about the Anderson family and how their collection came to be, I couldn't believe the shots of their home with these masterworks covering the walls. A thousand thanks to them for publicly displaying these incredible pieces.
"Hunk" and "Moo" Anderson, knowing nothing about art, went to the Louvre in the late 1960s and were smitten. They returned to the US and began collecting modern and contemporary American paintings and sculpture. Many of the works hung in their home, including Jackson Pollock's Lucifer in their daughter Putter's bedroom. The Anderson Collection at Stanford contains 121 works by and 86 artists. Celmins, De Kooning, Diebenkorn, Hoffman, Motherwell, Thiebaud, Rothko, Stella, Francis. If you are an art fan, this is not to be missed.
Anderson Collection is located next to the Cantor Arts Center and is also FREE!! It’s a really new building and features modern / contemporary art. I’m not usually into modern art, but I actually liked this museum. There weren’t as many incomprehensible monocolor sheets or weird lumpy sculptures as I had expected. Instead, there’s some very quirky stuff, some very beautiful stuff, some very interesting stuff. The display texts are written by grad students and are quite thoughtful.
