John is a world of knowledge when it comes to wines. Please be sure to taste the award winning bubblies. My favorites!
People driving through Hopland are likely to just slow down for the traffic light and glide on through. But don't make the tragic mistake of passing by this delightful winery tasting room - possibly the friendliest tasting room you have ever visited. There's such a wealth of affordably priced, wonderful wines, AND grassfed beef AND organic herbs - something for everyone to enjoy. I have become a regular customer and their wine club is outstanding. Twice a year there are 40% off sales for club members and that's when I stock up. Get acquainted with the wines. Wine also makes a wonderful gift, so even if you're a confirmed craft beer drinker, there are occasions when wine is great to give to others. I love love love their three sparkling wines - my favorite go to wines for everyday or special occasions. I especially love the rosé sparkling wine. Experience Mendocino hospitality at its finest. And of course, it being Mendo, they're organic and have been for 40 - count 'em 40 - years. This is the kind of farming we like to support. (As well as drink!)
Friends of ours recommended we stop by the McFadden Tasting Room in Hopland. WOW! John is amazing, a veritable fountain of information, very personable, obviously passionate about his product and it doesn't hurt that his product is one of the most amazing array of wines I've ever tasted! We consume a lot of wine with our food (we have a chef in the family). I've been through countless tastings, some good some not so good - and I tend to be a little overly critical (some call me a wine snob), but THIS.... was something truly special. I'm still going through the flavors in my mind. This single tasting has really turned my perception around of what wine should be. Not only food friendly, but this would be good just to sip and enjoy the flavors. If you have any interest in wine, this little hidden gem is one of he best kept secrets in the area!
All folks working the tasting room are very friendly and accommodating. John Cesano's knowledge of ALL wines is just incredible. Some reviews I read said he was overbearing???You have to be kidding. This man knows his wines and he loves to share his knowledge. I just love listening to him.If you don't want to know about wines then by all means don't go there *&(*)%^&^$$(*
We stopped at McFadden for a wine tasting during a road trip through northern California, and it's one of the most generous tastings I've ever experienced. 12 different wines for free? Can't beat that. While we weren't completely bowled over by any of them, we walked away with a few bottles and a nice story to tell. The host was a little bit overbearing, and we didn't need to be told over and over how many major wineries apparently purchase grapes from McFadden, which unfortunately detracted slightly from the overall experience. It's an easy stop in Hopland and worth putting on your list if you're in the area.
If you're heading to Mendocino, a stop at the McFadden Wine Tasting Room in Hopland is a "must"; you not only will taste great organic wines (my favorite are the Old Vine Zinfandel and the Sauvignon Blanc), but will be pleasantly educated about wine from Messieur John, your wine host. Poke around the Room and purchase some of those great organic herbs - Oh My!!! We've been visiting the McFadden Tasting Room several times a year since its opening; looking forward to the next visit. I live in the Midwest and have never visited McFadden Farm (although to publish this review I was required to select a date when I did visit! Disregard that) but I have been buying garlic braids from McFadden Farm every summer for at least 6 years, and not only is the garlic top quality, the braids make a beautiful addition to my kitchen. They offer a variety of braid lengths as well as a beautiful swag that is decorated with dried hot peppers. I have also purchased their wild rice and jars of organic herb blends, all of which are delicious. Customer service is excellent at McFadden as well, an important aspect when you are ordering online.
Really great wine tasting experience in Hopland! We tasted 13 wines which is pretty extensive and each wine came with some history about the McFadden vineyard, family or wine. The host was incredibly knowledgable and you could tell that wine is a passion for him. The wine itself is all organic, some biodynamic and all delicious. Many stood out. We bought a couple of bottles at really reasonable prices and didn't pay a tasting fee which was even more of a bonus. Unpretentious and fun wine tasting!
Some of the best Chardonnay in wine country.Great white organic wines available Reasonably priced. great service
McFadden is a well-rounded Winery in Hopland, CA. It is my family and I's favorite winery in the Hopland-Ukiah area. We absolutely love their wine! Red or white... they are all divine! The Coro is a personal favorite of mine. The herbs are OUT OF THIS WORLD! We use the Grilling herbs for all grilling purposes. It makes our burgers, steaks, chicken, etc... so tasty! We also use the Italian herbs for our weekly spaghetti nights. They add just the right touch. I highly recommend to make a stop here any chance you get. Just talking about McFadden has made my mind up for what I will be pairing with my dinner tonight... a nice glass of McFadden Zinfandel. YUM!
I lived in California wine country for 20 years, and I now work in the Colorado wine industry. I've tasted a lot of wine, and been to a lot of wineries in my life. On my first trip to Hopland, my friend and I went to The Wine Festival and visited about 10 wineries. McFadden was the last one, and by this time I wasn't all that interested in trying another wine, and I certainly was not going to buy anything. By the end of our tasting, I had tasted some of the freshest, cleanest, most unique wines I had ever had. Each wine is just so true to the varietal it's made from. I ended up shipping home a case of these beautiful wines. This is definitely a place to stop if you are a true wine lover. Look at all those gold medals and high ratings! Solid winners all around!
McFadden Vineyard and tasting room is a wonderful place in Hopland to taste award winning wines and learn about the best wines of Mendocino County. Tasting room and marketing manager John Cesano is a wealth of information and a true wine educator. The McFadden name is synonymous with organic farming and ranching. Located in Potter Valley, the ranch is totally off the grid and Guinness McFadden has created a wonderland with his own hydroelectric power generation and solar power as well. A very flexible wine club also gets you an invite to their annual club member party on the ranch. Ranch raised organic pork and lamb with all the trimmings, latest released sparkling and still wines and music under the stars. You can even camp on site if you don't want to drive after partying (highly recommended).
McFadden's holds a special place in people's hearts. One visit and you'll be hooked - a place with affordable, under the radar, really good wines. The 2011 Chardonnay, the Bruts, the late harvest riesling are my faves - you will find your own.The wine club is a super good deal - sales and discounts add up to real deals. I myself have ended up buying at least 10 cases here because of the price and quality. AND I try to leave room in the freezer before I stop in here, because they have an amazing array of grassfed beef from the farm, along with organically grown herbs.Once a year the vineyard is open to the public during their annual dinner - I have now been twice, as it's one of my favorite winery events. You can also camp overnight after the event and enjoy swimning in the Russian River. But even just stopping in at the tasting room is a treat - it will introduce you to this great place and all the wonderful people who make it - and the wines - special.
McFadden has great wines and a nice little gift shop as well. Located near many other wine tasting venues.
After visiting several wineries further north towards Ukiah, we stopped in at MaFadden's tasting room on Main Street in Hopland on our way back to CLoverdale. We made the visit primarily as my wife had met them at the SF Vintner Market in the spring. It didn't hurt that the owner of the owner at the B&B where we were staying also recommended them. It was a Monday and we were the only people in the room. We so received the undivided attention of the pourer. Had a good time talking with him about Mendocino grapes and wines. After sampling several different wines, we ended up buying a bottle of a very mellow old vine Zinfandel. Also bought some of their homegrown organic spices for the kitchen.
