My husband was looking for a glass store and our GPS led me to this jewel. It was so peaceful and exactly what we needed that day after a stressful week. Our son really enjoyed looking at the li'l island and we will definitely come back!
The Pedestrian Bridge is just a lure to an area that is much more than it appears. You can see the bridge from I-15 and we always wanted to know more about it considering the bridge does not go over water? Found out that the parking is located across from the Mall in Escondido so it was easy access and on top of that there is always a small farmer's market on Sunday if you go on that day. The beginning of the hike goes out along the interstate and cuts under the highway towards the bridge. The bridge is the only way across "the lake". When you get to the end of the lake make a right and then take the first trail to the right to travel along the lake. You will given a pleasant surprise when get behind the mountain and find the lake and all the waterfowl and sounds of nature and you can't hear the traffic. We walked the entire length of the lake and around to the Bernardo Community Center and then returned back to our original destination. We spent 5 1/2 hours with a 4 and 5 year old and they explored all day. Bring water and hats and the area has no real cover in most areas. This was a nice surprise and hope to do other areas of the park.
Lake Hodges is awesome all around for hiking and MTB. The views are very nice and the trails are not too intense.
The wonderful trails that stretch around Lake Hodges are a true delight. A great place for a picnic, there is a bench and picnic table at the far west end of the trail under the shade of lovely trees. There is a lot of local wild life.
Lake Hodges looks beautiful from afar, especially if there has been rain and it's green, not now. Took a few walks when I was new and seemed desolate then I heard about a girl being raped and murdered there so I don't go by myself anymore which is sad since it's so close to my home.
If you like nature you will like this bridge especially when there is more water in lake Hodges again. There are lots of Western Grebe's displaying here during the early spring but right now in October of 2014 after zero rain again there are just weeds.
lake hodges is a hidden gem that goes on in a surprising way. take a drive down the del dios highway and you will see a gorgeous area you might not have known existed! take a boat ride in the lake even!
What can one say about a bridge . . . it's there, and you walk over it. The only unique thing about it is the engineering, you will not find another one like it in the world.
The bridge is a great addition to the Lake, but sadly we need water....I have done a boot camp workout on this bridge and it was great.
The drought in CA has taken a toll on Lake Hodges and the water level is so far down. The lake used to be so beautiful and this bridge now seems almost ill-conceived for the amount of money the taxpayers paid for it. However, that this bridge is considered an "attraction" is laughable. This is near where a young woman was murdered which inspired Chelsea's law, and another attacked. Perhaps a security detail would have been a better investment of taxpayer's dollars. This is Escondido Chamber of Commerce hype.
It's a great way to cross the Lake w/o dealing with traffic. The trails are great for hiking, biking or bird and wildlife viewing.
Well all I can say it was a heck of alot of money to spend on a pedestrian bridge. While it is somewhat modern in design and crosses a mostly dry lake bed, wet at certain periods in the year I am not sure this is a local high point and can be seen from North and South bound lanes of Interstate 15. The walk to the bridge under the I15 roadway is more impressive.
I am all for having a pedestrian and bike bridge across lake Hodges, but this bridge was extravagant. It could have been a better use of our tax dollars. I talked to the workers as they were constructing the bridge (several years ago). I was told the bridge was in the order of $10,000,000.
Parking is fairly close and when you cross the bridge you can access easy trails to walk. The lake is best seen during winter when there is water below the bridge, in summer it is bone dry so bring plenty of water! Lots of birds and squirrels. The bridge takes about 10 minutes to cross. Enjoy!
The bridge offers a geat view year round. When the water is high you can see huge catfish swimming around in the morning. When the water is low there are lots of different birds and animals to see.
