America's First Ladies often seem to become lost in the shadow cast by their husbands. This is unfortunate and thankfully is on its way to being solved by this museum. Unique because of its focus, the museum has excellent docents and a guided tour. P.S. Ask your docent for tips on places to eat in the immediate vicinity.
I had hoped there would be more to this place. They feature different First Ladies. There must not be enough room to have a lot of things out at once. We saw some Mary Lincoln gowns. They feature items from all First Ladies but it is a small space so there is not a lot out at once. They do have a video to watch as well.
I was taken by the amount of information and the history. We are very fortunate to have such a great museum in our area.
If you love historical facts and would like to learn more about the First Ladies of our country this is the place to visit. The tour and docents have many facts to share as well as the displays are so interesting and personal.
I'm very glad that this museum exists and that we visited. The stories that the first ladies have to tell us are fascinating. The tour guide was nice and knowledgeable. However, it's clear that the museum is still working on improvements and is still acquiring new pieces, which I think is great. The museum could benefit from some additional storytelling aspects, but I think it's worth a visit.
Loved the old building and it's wonderful wood paneling. This has been lovingly restored and beautifully preserved. So much history of the the First Ladies of the USA.
We stopped at this landmark while traveling through Ohio, and I'm glad we had a chance to see it, as it gives the perspective of "being a mom in the White House". The tour has 2 parts - the first is more informal, with exhibits to walk around and see. We were also shown a movie which was very entertaining. Afterward, we walked across the street to the McKinley house, where we got a more formal tour of Victorian life for a first lady. The tourguides at both locations were very friendly and knowledgeable - the whole tour took about 90 minutes. Younger kids may get a bit restless but our oldest daughter really enjoyed it. Stop by if you have the chance!
We really enjoyed our visit to the First Ladies Library and Historic Site. I learned quite a lot from the various reading materials and videos we viewed. The buildings were lovely and a treasure in themselves. The museum is small and can easily be done in half a day. Our only wish was that on the guided tour we had more time to browse and read.
The tour of the National First Ladies' Library and the Ida Saxton McKinley House was thoroughly enjoyable. Our tour began at the elegant Education and Research Center, formerly a bank. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable and informative. The tour continued at the Saxton-McKinley House, and was conducted by a guide dressed as Abigail Adams, with a very pleasant demeanor. She was so knowledgeable and we enjoyed her wonderful stories about President and Mrs. McKinley. This beautifully restored house is definitely a must see. Everyone we met, who was associated with this historic site, made this visit a most pleasant and memorable experience.
I quite enjoyed my time at the National First Ladies Museum and the Ida Saxton McKinley Historic Home. My Mom and I scheduled a tour for 10:30am on a Saturday. We had never been in the Canton downtown area before and got a little turned around looking for the parking lot. I called the museum and Caroline stayed on the phone with me as she directed me to the parking lot. What great service! When we arrived to the museum, we met another kind lady. We found out that Mom's National Parks pass enabled us to get a discount on admission. Then she showed us downstairs to enjoy a film before the tour started. The facilities were fabulous. So clean and beautiful from the Victoria era! When the tour started, we watching another video for their special exhibition. Very educational. Then the knowledgeable tour guide took us through the Educational Center exhibition. So informative! Then we headed over to the Ida McKinley house. It was fascinating! And that tour guide was awesome too! I loved learning all about the McKinley presidency, Ida's life, and seeing this home, filled with many of their belongings. The ballroom was beautiful too, and the tour guide allowed us to take our time and stroll through and see all of the first ladies portraits. All around, it was about 2 hours. What a great time!
The National First Ladies Library is a jewel in Canton's crown. I enjoyed our guide dressed as Abigail Adams on August 9, 2014. She answered all of our questions and was infomative. I also enjoyed seeing the different china patterns from different families and dresses worn by Mrs. McKinley. The gift shop was expanded and had a nice selection of historical gifts. Well worth a visit while in Canton.
this place is beautiful!walking in you feel so glad to be there feeling it's décor is stunning with watercolor paintings and other beautiful artistry.
Enjoyed the movie with experiences from the female side. The artifacts were good. The house and was very nice. The tour guide was excellent.
The home associated with this museum was occupied by Ida Mckinley before her marriage to William and, eventually by the couple for a time. It is particularly interesting. We enjoyed the videotape presentations and the inaugural gowns. There is still work to be done to make this museum first class, but we were happy that we visited. They have a rather extensive gift shop. The docent was particularly knowledgeable.
First you watch a video loop which is informative, then you enter an elevator to go down stairs where you can look at a display cabinet that the employees made of who inspires them which I had no interest in, After that you go outside and up a set of stairs. Why not just have us go out the way we came in? There was no need to go on the elevator at all. We continued walking a short distance to the McKinley House. There we get to see how they installed an elevator and an air conditioning/Heating system so the walls are now cornered off instead of being rounded like they were originally. Many of the items in the house did not belong to any historical figure but they are from the time period. Much of the lighting and wall paper are reproductions which are not even reproductions of the original items of the house.
