Sorry we had not brought binoculars to view peregrine falcons!! Cliff in sight but too distant to view bird activity with naked eye
This short hike is very strenuous - we climbed up ~650 ft all through rocks and stones and tree roots. The final section is almost vertical. But the view off the top is breathtaking - really worth the whole climb. And then the descent back. We are mid-aged generally fit hikers, but this climb was a real challenge for us. We made it within 1 hr with several stops, but got passed on the way up and down by some obviously more fit climbers - so it's the matter of personal fitness we guess :).
Mt. Horrid is located off Route 73 at the top of Brandon Gap. Vermont's Long Trail crosses the highway at this location, and the short hike to the top of Mt. Horrid is worth the moderate exertion. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the views from above.
It's a very steep (but short) hike, so it can be a challenge for smaller children. If you're not physically fit, you may want to take a pass on this one. The cliffs offer about a 200+ degree view of the Green Mountain National Forest and the Champlain Valley. One gets an incredible view of the NY Adirondacks in the distance to the west. Sunsets there can be breathtaking. One can actually look down at the Peregrine Falcons circling below along the side of the cliffs. Please ignore the one star review. The writer must have not even bothered to hike the trail.
Don't waste your time. View from roadside observation lookout sucks. You just see the side of a mountain with powerlines in front of it. Not an overlook. You are not overlooking anything except the ground.
This is a beautiful view in the fall of a mountain area with perigrine falcons.
