This made our trip. Fort is fantastic and so is the pier/beach. This is the hidden gem of Fernandina. We are very happy we decided at the last minute to explore this park.
Went on Sunday afternoon, only one person in character. All other exhibits locked for example blacksmith, bakery. Do not go on a Sunday unless you want to simply walk around Fort. The fort is in great shape as it never seen battle. You can walk along natural beach outside of Fort. Biking, hiking and walking trails down a lovely tree lined entry. 6$ for car and 2$/pp to enter Fort.
This is a lovely spot. The fort is interesting in itself, and the setting is beautiful. Enjoy a glimpse of history, the beach, and the pier.
Excellent piece of local history. Makes you wonder how in the world they protected the area.Worth the time and the trip. Staff was GREAT.
One of many similar old five-sided Civil War era forts along the South-Atlantic Coast from South Carolina to Florida. Located on the northern end of Amelia Island at the Florida-Georgia border. Construction began in 1847 and named in honor of General Duncan Lamont Clinch who fought bravely during the Second Seminole Indian War. It now encompasses the Fort Clinch State Park area on the St. Mary's River entrance from the Atlantic Ocean to Cumberland Sound. There are walking and biking paths in the acreage surrounding the Fort. The Fort contains a nice display of artifacts, cannons and ramparts of the old Fort entered over the swing bridge over the dry ditch or mote. There are several guides in the fortress to explain the items and artifacts you are seeing, especially in the old barrack's building and in the quartermaster building. The fort is still under reconstruction and you can see the work in progress during your visit. There is a bookstore, rest rooms and gift shop at the entrance to the Fort, along with a short-order grill outside the entrance next to the bookstore for eats and drinks. There are vending machines for ice and drinks in the gift shop area. There are picnic areas and a fishing pier and walking area on the beach fronting the Atlantic Ocean. It is a wonderful area for singles, couples, families and children. The facilities and infrastructure are handicapable friendly.
If you walk or bike in, the fee into the park is $2/person, by car, it's $6 per car. Touring the fort is an additional $2 per person. The park is well maintained, with good campsites (one set near the ocean and the other with more vegetation...I personally preferred the one with more vegetation) and nice walking/biking paths. The fort is worth a visit. There is an informative video at the visitor's center and then there was a man in period uniform in the grocery inside the fort who was extremely knowledgeable and answered the questions we had after we had explored the fort on our own.The park is also a nesting ground for birds and signage provides educational opportunities.I spent a day here exploring the park and fort and would enjoy coming back to camp as well.
Quiet clean sighs well marked. Nice time year not many visitors there. Would be good area to go camping.
The fee to get in is $6 / car and $2 for the fort to view it. It is worth the entry fee as this location is great. The contruction of the fort from the mid 1800 is amazing. Bring your comfortable walking shoes and your camera. You will not be disappointed.
Loved the park and the fort, it was great fun to learn about the history and get a feel of how it must have been back then.
Six mile mountain bike trail that ran through the woods next to the road. We loved it even though some steep climbs with large tree roots made us list our bikes up.
