This zoo is a nice place to stop for families and kids. This is a zoo that take animals that can not survive in the wild or would be otherwise euthanized. There is a small park just off to the right as you enter as well as a picnic area. They have reptiles, birds, a tiger, a bear, petting area, native species of animals also. Its worth a visit when you come to Prescott.
Full disclosure...I was a Docent there for a couple of years, years ago. I go back, when I can, just to see how things are going, like this visit. And a lot has continued to happen. It's small, and you will be closer to most of the animals, safely, than you will be at a big zoo.Since Heritage Park is a sanctuary, they accept animals that cannot be returned to the wilds. If you take a tour, you'll find out a little about that.Did I mention that they have, if not the largest, then one of the largest cockroach collections in North America? :-) Dont worry...they are in their own little display, and you can pass them right by.
A very interesting place (although a bit tough to find). It's not so much a zoo as an animal reclamation center. They have a number of very interesting animals and they tell you what happened to them and how they got to the rehabilitation facility. Make sure to be there at 2 PM so you can see Sasha the bear being fed. Great experience for kids !!!
Yes the zoo is smaller then most Major city zoos but is also half the price! This zoo is Amazing and very fun. Don't pass it up!
This was a cute little zoo and we did enjoy ourselves. I'm not sure if it was the time of year we went (January), but in my opinion, for the number of empty cages, it should have cost about $5 as opposed to $8. The gentleman in the ticket booth was not particularly welcoming, nor did we see much in the way of staff out and about answering questions. They did have some larger type animals as well as a petting zoo for the kids. They also had large birds, reptiles and a tarantula grotto. We made our way through in about an hour. Discounts are available to active military, but not veterans. They were also having an upcoming special for couples on Valentines Day... two for the price of one which would have been more in line with the experience provided.
It was really nice on the other side of Willow Lake, AZ, at the Zoo! We visited the animals and donated our pumpkin as we learned from other folks certain animals eat pumpkin. A fun day!
I want to share my recent experience with the photography tour provided by Wayne Fischer. He offered a generous lengthy tour behind the scenes of each of the animals with wonderful opportunities for photography. I highly recommend you take this opportunity to photograph each of the animals and learn their significant stories. After the tour I stopped in the office and purchased an annual membership in support of the important work that they provide at the Heritage Park Zoological Sanctuary. This is a wonderful place to spend time with your children. There is abundant parking and a great nearby lake. It is very affordable.
There's always something going on for the kids to do here. We usually come every year for Boo at the Zoo. The kids get to trick or treat throughout the zoo and candy stations are positioned throughout the zoo. This year we participated in the haunted tour too! It's fun trip either day or night.
What a great place to stroll around to visit the animals in a relaxed, uncrowded setting. This zoo is really an animal sanctuary where injured or formerly privately owned wild beasts are cared for. Though the pathways can be a little uneven, with a little attention as you are waling through, this should not be an issue. Visitors can enjoy watching animals be fed and talking with zoo keepers about the critters. And once a month there is an evening viewing available, so bring your flashlight! There's a small gift shop at the entrance where visitors can purchase a variety of souvenirs, drinks, and snacks. Just don't feed the animals! It's inexpensive to enter. This is a on-profit entity worth supporting.
Great little hidden sanctuary. Not big like your local zoo's, but this is more for animals that can't be returned to the wild. We went when Santa visited to bring presents for the animals and because of that there were zoo keepers that went along with to explain the stories behind some of the animals. The mountain lion who was a pet and declawed, the bear (21 years ago) who's mother was shot by a hunter, the fox who was being trained to be used in movies, etc etc...You could walk through the whole zoo in about 1 hour, they have a little playground for kids to play on. Prices are very reasonable and the park is strictly run on entrance fees.Go check it out!
never crowded, rescued animals, you can get pretty close and have the experience to yourself, picnic and water-cool down area
This was a total surprise as I did not know what to expect. I am not usually a fan of zoos. Too overwhelming. This 'rescue' zoo is very small-but well set out and what struck me is that the zoo keepers really have an attachment to the animals they care for. The staff were very knowledgeable and kind. My 4 year old grandaughter loved the 2 hours we spent there.
You cannot expect this to compare to the likes of the San Diego Zoo or Brookfield zoo. But what you will find is a great place to bring the kids and learn something while you're there. This is a small zoo in a small town. It is based more on animal rescue and education than an actual zoo. There are few hired workers and many volunteers. People in the area donate food and supplies and help out in order to keep this going. It really is a great place to bring small kids to see the animals up close. The zookeepers are more than willing to share their knowledge and give your trip a personal experience. Enjoy the quaintness of it.
Four stars instead of five because there is only one bathroom in the whole park. LOTS of great animals to see! Well taken care of too! Park for kids. no water fountains though and the machine cost $2 for a bottle water.
This is a small zoo and it has nothing on San Diego (for example), but we love it! You get such personal interactions with the animals. It is a wonderful place to go for a few hours to explore. Check Groupon - there are often deals!
