Extremely well done attraction. Desert botanical garden and zoo all in one.Grounds are beautiful and spacious. Hummingbird enclosure was outstanding.
Lots to see for families - animals and flora. Fascinating and beautiful scenery. My teens enjoyed seeing the javelinas and the coatis, while I enjoyed the cacti and other plants.
If you spend some days in the Tucson area and would like to learn about local cacti and other plants, this is a good place to go. I visited in March, so the weather was good, but I can imagine that it can be really (too) hot if you visit this museum in the summer season. The good thing is that sunscreen is provided in each toilet area, which are spread around the venue, and water is provided on several corners. I liked the explanation of all the plants and cacti. I bet the zoo part must be great, but this time nearly all the animals were hiding themselves. I liked the hummingbirds.
Just a short drive outside of the urbaness of Tucson, this amazing oasis in the desert offers a unique look at the subtle wonders of the desert. It really is an enjoyable learning experience for all ages.
We had a great time walking around seeing all the animals and Flower exhibit. I could watch the Prairie dogs for hours. It was clean inside and out.
A very large museum/zoo that has a lot of exhibits and walking trails. The hummingbirds were neat--could watch them fly into their nests only a foot or two away and feed their young.
I think I am spoiled living in the Phoenix area and having memberships to the Phoenix Zoo and the Phoenix Botanical Gardens. The Sonora Desert Museum is well kept and the animals look healthy and well cared for. Their enclosures were of good size. The hummingbird exhibit was the highlight of the visit. But compared to Phoenix the zoo part and the botanical garden part are small. If you are from out of town and this is your only opportunity to discover the desert and its animals then go. You will enjoy it. If you are from the Phoenix area or are heading there, then wait and go then.
Tips: come early, before the crowds and tour buses. Plan your time to catch the "Fangs & Feathers" talk and the Raptors display. Wear comfortable shoes - lots of walking. Full tour of all the paved paths and buildings takes at least 3 hours. Enjoy!
Staff was more than helpful. Since we only had 4 hours to tour it one of the staff members walked with us for 3/4 hour explaining various plants, flowers and wildlife. The theatre presentation of the gila monster and rattlesnake was very informative. Admission price was reasonable and there was a wide variety of things to see. We understand why this is the #1 recommended attraction on trip advisor.
