This is why we made the trip..to spend days wandering around the shops, pubs and streets. This town is steeped in history, and while it costs nothing to wander around the streets taking it all in, I highly recommend taking in at least one history-centric tour if one can while there, if for no other reason than to find one with access to historic places on private property you might not be able to see otherwise. (some of the ghost tours have agreements with the local businesses and go into unfinished portions of the buildings generally off-access to patrons, for example)It's an easy area to navigate, as well, which makes exploring without fear of getting hopelessly lost do-able.
Savannah is overall not a safe city but this part is very safe and very nice, with plenty of carriage rides, and other non-standard transportation. Many of the good restaurants and a decent shopping scene are here, too.
I loved the weather when the temperature was above 40, and the fact that you could do a lot of walking. The city's architecture is absolutely beautiful. Forsyth Park is a real gem.
Savannah is great. My 1st time visiting was 20+ years ago. But as public awareness increases, the charm and ease of access diminishes. My recent experiences of Savannah are working my way through touristy crowds and shops and stores that cater to the masses.
My wife and I visited Savannah four 5 days the week before St. Patricks Day. Having visited before we had decided that this time we would stay in the Historic District. Boy was this the right decision. We parked the car on Sunday and never needed it again until Thursday. The District is very easily walked as the grid layout is easy to manuver and almost everything is easily within 1 mile of almost any point in the city. Naturally if you have any problems walking this would not be your cup of tea. There are however free DOT busses as well as reasonably priced "pedal cabs" that seat 2. EVERYTHING is in this area from good eats to fine dining and entertainment, pubs, and of course the wonderful parks to sit, rest and just enjoy!!
Nice view of the river right in the middle of town and good shops. The market area was nice and had a lot of neat things to purchase for a good price.
Lots of history in Savannah. Beautiful downtown! Too much traffic though. Beautiful squares with gardens and trees - gave it a small town feel.
Walking through the historic district was just terrific! Being able to have a glass of wine in hand and saunter along was wonderful!
It is easy to walk around the Historic District but would recommend the hop on and off trolley with guided tour to get that extra information and to get from A to B.
The Savannah Historic District is very walkable. Every few blocks is a square, often commemorating a famous Savannah resident. The architecture of the homes is interesting and most have been beautifully restored. Throughout the historic district you will find many outdoor cafes. The Savannah College of Art and Design has quite a few builings located there.
