This is a well-maintained property that run tours and even has porta-johns, benches and wastebins onsite for the tourists. Rather than being a bad thing that detracts from the beautiful live oak lined rows, this makes visiting this historic landmark pleasant and clean. I didn't take a paid tour, but the snippets I overheard from the ones being conducted while I was wandering about seemed to be professional and well-informed.
The cemetery is easy to find. Several graves are highlighted at the visitor center. Unfortuanly the statue of the Bird Girl ahs been removed due to damage caused by visitors. There are
You have to see this place. Even if visiting a cemetery is not high on your list of places to see, you should check this one out. It is just too beautiful! I know that sounds creepy but it is difficult to describe. Stop at the office and get a map and guide/brochure. You can drive through this one and stop where you want. We were there on a drizzly/overcast day and that just added to the beautiful creepiness. Check out the kiosk on the front porch of the office building. You can search for you family names to see if you have some relative buried there.
This is a lovely, atmospheric place to spend an hour or so. It is possible to take tours, but we walked around by ourselves. (HINT: notice where the tour guides stop and head in that direction.) We saw Johnny Mercer's grave, Gracie and Conrad Aiken. There is lots of Spanish moss hanging from trees and blooming camellias. The foliage is particularly interesting to us Northeners.
If you are like me and enjoy exploring cemeteries than do not miss this one. Easy to spend a few hours walking and exploring.
I can't believe I'm actually writing about a cemetery. But it really is worth seeing. It's like seeing slices of life through the years--and history through the eyes of monuments. It's not that there's so many well known people buried there but that people seemed really intent on erecting monuments with personality. The setting is gorgeous on the water and you can drive through most of it and still have a good experience.
Clean, peaceful, aesthetically pleasing. If you're into visiting cemeteries, be sure you visit this one! I definitely recommend it for a nice afternoon!
Ethereal beauty steeped in history. The live oaks, Spanish moss, and beautiful statuary make this a must see for everyone's visit to Savannah!
This opens early for walkers and tourist to walk through. You'll hear this on a tour but if you don't. The soldiers stayed in the cemetery during the war and out of boredom they removed headstones to other graves or changed details on the headstones. The ones on the brick wall are the most interesting.
Very peaceful and cool cemetary to visit. Well worth your time investment. The birds are very vocal here. I wasn't sure about going to a cemetary but actually enjoyed this visit.
