I am confused by the review that says this site is open for guided tours. We were told at the tourist office that it is private property and not open for visits. Since it is a/the site where Isabella met Columbus, and the site where Catherine of Aragon was born (or maybe baptized) it is an important historic site. Given that so many cathedrals and monasteries are open for tours, it is a disappointment that the archbishop/diocese does not consider the option for this palace. Or that the tourist office gave us misinformation! We live two blocks away and pass the site almost every day and sigh. It is beautiful from the outside.
The palace is on the pretty, less crowded side of the city. Beautiful building with interesting history...wish we could see the inside. Loved seeing all the storks on the old building in the walled yard area.
The original spanish name sounds so much more grand!!! A very nice place to wander and explore, There were tours of the interior, but only in Spanish. The area is surrounded by a plaza that is a gathering place for locals in the evenings The Archbishop Palace is located at Plaza del Palacio. It was built in the 13th century as a palace-fortress to house the archbishops of Toledo until the 19th century. The façade was designed by Alonso de Covarrubias in the 16th century. There is a large tower called the Tenorio Tower that was added in the 14th century, and this shows the former use of the building as a defense fortress. Very very nice indeed!!!
A very nice place to wander and explore, more exterior than interior. We heard there were tours of the interior, but only in Spanish. The area is surrounded by a plaza that is a gathering place for locals in the evenings and weekends, plenty of kids and the liveliness of community life.
The Archbishop Palace is located at Plaza del Palacio. It was built in the 13th century by Rodrigo Ximenez de Rada (hero of the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212) as a palace-fortress to house the archbishops of Toledo until the 19th century. The façade was designed by Alonso de Covarrubias in the 16th century. There is a large tower called the Tenorio Tower that was added in the 14th century, and this shows the former use of the building as a defense fortress. In 1485 Catalina de Aragon was born in the palace. She was the younger daughter of Queen Isabel of Castille and King Fernando of Aragon. She was married to Henry VIII of England in 1509. In the 15th and 16th century the palace was transformed into a Renaissance palace under Arhbishops Cisneros, Fonseca, and Tavera. In the middle of the 19th century it was restored with a Neogothic and Mudejar style by Manuel Laredo. The Palace suffered a serious fire in 1939, that not only destroyed an artistic legacy but also the State's Central Archives.
