You don't really know Seville if you haven't paid a visit to its Queen, and in her sanctuary She reigns supreme. You see pictures of the Macarena all over the place in Seville, but these are invariably closeups of a grieving face. So when you see the Virgin here, in all her splendor, it's almost jarring. You will come across few shrines where Mary appears with this level of regalia and sheer drama. There's also a museum on the side, in the little shop, where you can browse three small floors of regalia, as well as a couple of TV monitors where you can vicariously experience the drama of Holy Week in Seville, which culminates with Her Majesty Herself making Her way into the Cathedral. Quite something, even if you aren't Catholic.
There is a great atmosphere - and wonderful imagery..feels special. We had an opportunity to meet with some of the staff and they are very helpful - wanted to get a mass said for a relative who was very ill and they went out of their way to assist.
A beautiful old Church in the middle of a pleasant quarter of Sevilla, Worth visiting, you will enjoy walking down there
The Sevillanos love the Virgen de la Macarena and have great devotion to her, so this is one of the most popular churches in the city, getting many visits from the natives. It is a bit far from the center of town but is worth seeing. The architecture is very Sevillano.
The walking tour which takes you around the Macarena area is brilliant and is included in your city bus tour ticket. You get a total insight into the significance of religion in this area and Spain and a look at parts of Seville you may miss, "where the locals live". Some great little bars, cafes, but the jewel in the crown is the Basilica itself. Many others have said how moving it is, but go see it yourself and be moved.
We attended mid-day mass here today; we're not Catholic, but the faith and reverence of this full church's worshipers during a week-day service was contagious... the interior of the Basilica Macarena itself is among Spain's most beautiful...& the iconic life-size figures of 'the Virgin' and Christ that process as 'Semana Santa' (Holy/Easter Week) observance highlights in Seville seem vividly alive (as they indeed are, to their devoted faithful). One of Seville's top church attractions (there are many)! Definitely worth making a special detour to the Macarena area (a bit outside the historic center, but an easy taxi ride). Do go! NOTE: No pictures during masses, please :)
The Virgen de la Macarena always causes a goose flesh! The church is quite small compared to El Salvador and the Cathedral but very nice and with a very special spirit. And to see the la Virgen leaving the church in the Semana Santa and her return in the morning hours is something special!
Our apartment was in Macarena - which isn't far from the main tourist area at all (santa cruz).Totally worth staying here - you get to see the old Jewish area, and meet the locals. Basilica Macarena was beautiful, we got to see the locals training for the Holy week - carrying heavy loads through the streets.
The decoration and the quality of the paintings is amazing, even if there is a lot of decoration it remains in harmony and is not that much overloaded as it could be in some barocco rocco...The representations of angels are impressive and so pure... and the architecture by itself is so balanced...You are not stressed and able to pray if you want... and the place is quite central in order to visit other places after such as Alameda or other central places...
This is a very special church with the contents in my view being better than the cathedral and what's more.....free. The Madonna is used for the easter parades and holds a special place in the hearts of the Seville people.
The Basicila was just 100m from our Hotel (Tryp Macarena). A portico entrance and internally there was fantastic Navity display. We have been to several Basicila's around europe and this was probably one of the best. A must see when in Seville.
Spectacular. Inside, the frescoes of the walls are incredible. Visit is a must, adding to the traditional visits in Seville.
The Basilica Macarena is located outside the city center of Seville. As part of our Rick Steves group, we were given a tour of the Basilica and the Museum. The main focus is not on specific religious art, but rather the custom of Holy Week in Seville. We were given a full description of the celebration and shown the objects used during the street parade. You will need a guide or other research to understand the celebration. One of my favorite activities on my visit to Spain.
That's what I kept thinking when I looked all around at this gorgeous Basilica. What still impresses me about this period is the way they painted ceilings in such great detail. Breathtaking. If you can make it to mass on Sundays, it is a beautiful service.
The Macarena (the holy Virgin) is one of the symbols of Seville, especially because of the Samana Santa, when the statue is taken out in a procession, so a must see! It was exciting to go visit, but nothing prepared me for the beautiful altars inside...they will take your breath away!
