Take your time and enjoy this ambient stretch of Burgos. Its fitting that the paseo del Espolon is in the pious city of Burgos; this pedestrian boulevard aptly showcases the beautiful and aesthetically-pleasing manipulation of plants - I visited in the late fall and it was immaculately well kept. Nice for a stroll after a nice glass of Ribera o Rioja.
If you like to know about human evolution from the very begining, this is a must.Para enamorados de la prehistoria y la evolución humana desde sus principios en África. Atapuerca super bien explicado
I Loved it.It was the perfect resting point in a sunny hot summer day. There is a lot of shade for you to rest.Surrounding the Espolon there are lots of small stores where you can buy local products and souvenirs
It worth a walk in the evening. Full of peolple taking a walk or drinkingand eating in the nearby cafes/esplanades.
The Spaniards love to stroll (walk) and this is a great place to join them. There are several cafes along the way and it is extremely picturesque with the river on one side of you and the lovely architecture on the other side. This is parallel to the cathedral and on your way to/from the Plaza Mayor. The trees are well manicured and while I don't like these willows without the green leaves, they do make a fantastic statement of design.
The pollard willows on this stretch of walk way are very picturesque. In winter, when it might be a bit misty, the atmosphere is top. On Sundays, it seems that the entire population is walking on this paseo.
We came across this riverside park by accident. We were in Plaza Mayor which is a large empty square during the day, (It is full of local people at night taking the air. We watched a group of young people singing and "fight" dancing - very energetic and impressive.) We walked across to look at the town hall where there are arches underneath. We walked through and we were in this delightful riverside park. There are plenty of places to take a coffee and people watch. There are wonderful topiary yew trees, large trees of various types and lovely roses in full bloom. There is a walk shaded with pruned and knobbly plane trees. There are ponds and fountains and we were amused to watch a labrador having great fun in the water! It was only with extreme difficulty that it's owner managed to persuade it that it was time to leave! At one end of the park is the marvellous St Mary's Gate one of 6 remaining city gates and it takes you to the Cathedral. At the other end of the park is the statue of El Cid. He is high on a plinth riding his horse, sword in hand and beard and cloak flying in the wind! There are various bridges across the fast flowing, clean river Arlanzon. You can drop down the steps and walk at the side the river - the grass is mown. We walked until we came to a very boggy area and red suede shoes are not suitable for walking in mud! We enjoyed this park very much and the river Arlanzon and it's tributary the Veno make a lovely fresh green green "ribbon" flowing through the city.
In contrast to the busy cathedral area of Burgos, the walkways along the river are a nice way to escape the crowds. The local people stroll along here and walk their dogs on the riverbank. Lovely gardens with statues and fountains.
The Espolon, the tree-lined pedestrian avenue along the riverside in Burgos, is a wonderful touch of European culture in a town that´s somewhat stuffy and conservative. The people-watching at any of the cafés is great (even if the prices are higher out there), the sculptures and fountains and manicured gardens are splendid. A wonderful place to spend an afternoon or evening.
I walked at least 7 kms along this path. It cuts through the city giving it a breath of fresh air. Surprised to see people sun bathing along the river and at the wide part, to see children going paddling. There is a bicycle track and a foot track. So nice to see local people using the path for exercise. The part of the path, near the Arco de Santa Maria (Gate) has statues which become fewer as one moves further away from the Gate. There are bridges one can use to cross from one side to another.
