This place it's a "must".You'll be inside a volcano.AWSOME!!!You may want to take a jacket or something to protect from rain drops.
I've visited it a few years ago on summer. It was really a nice experience. This time I tried to visit it on winter. I realized that was a bad idea. It was raining and besides that there were no visits and December and January. Means I could not repeat the experience. As recommendation, please certify yourself that it open when you're planning your visit.
I love caves. This one is easy to get down and up. The story of how the cave was formed was the best part of the trip. I will leave it up to the guides to explain the story.
This is so interesting and beautiful. None of our pictures captured how pretty it is inside. I'm a bit leery of caves in general (a bit claustrophobic), but this was fine. It's cool inside so bring a light jacket. Be prepared to get dipped on a bit and to me amazed.
This was a unique experience to walk into a volcanic cone. Fabulous it was too. Wet and drippy and cool, with lots of steps. Luckily there are hand rails all along the steps. Wear flat sensible shoes to see the caverns, silica stalagmites (quite small but amazing) and other volcanic formations. Prepare to stand in awe and gaze!
Great time exploring this volcano. Lots of stairs so wear comfortable shoes (actually saw a lady is heels, impressive but not practical) and layers, you will work up a sweat climbing up the stairs. It is moist in there.
This is a must do while on the island. It's quite the work-out but worth every bit. The lake at the bottom is amazing. The view from inside is beautiful.
This cave was pretty cool. There wasn't a tour or anything, but was cool to walk down into, had stairs and lights throughout and even a small lake at the bottom. Very wet inside, I would recommend sneakers.. not flip flops..
It was incredible being able to enter into an extinct volcano, unique experience with beautiful silica stone and vegetation.
I've been to this attraction 3 times and it always amazes me!!! The last time we went or kids were to small to remember, I'm glad we had a chance to come back at an age our children will now remember because it is incredible. A must see attraction. Where else in the world can you walk into a volcano?
I am a portuguese travel blogger, I read a lot about several different places and I had no idea that Terceira island had such an amazing attraction as this one. I have had the chance to swim inside a beautiful crater in São Miguel island, to walk around a huge crater in Faial island, to relax inside natural hot water pools made with lava but I could never imagine myself walking trough what used to be lava tunnels. Algar do Carvão is an empty volcano. This was my favorite place of the 3 islands I have visited. The minimalist music and the sound of water drops falling into a small lake as well as the incredible colours from the stone walls help creating a unique atmosphere.
This is a superb, amazing place. As the guide said, this is the only place in the world where you can actually visit the inside of a volcano. The volcanic caverns are huge with a lake at the bottom caused by all the drips of water. It was also quite quiet. An amazing attraction like this would normally be inundated with visitors but we were told there are only about 14000 visitors a year. Remember it is only open in the afternoon with the closing time earlier in winter.
A place that you shouldn't miss, an amazing proof of the power of nature. I was amazed with the size of the cave and the explanations provided by the guides.
Algar do Carvao is an empty volcano, the only one you can actually enter and go down in. The experience is incredible! All the way at the bottom you can see the lake that goes down even more, it's a hike but very much worth it. Make sure to give yourselves enough time (over an hour to spend in there) and some time to spend outside because the view from that parking lot is also amazing!
Amazing place! Very beautiful and impressive. But I think it would be better without strange music. Natural sounds of water drip-drop are absolutely enough.
