There are so many beautiful nature spots on the island which are worth your time. If you really wanted to catch some time indoors, then this is the place for you..
This is a beautiful small church. Since I was not with a tour or guide, it was difficult for me to know of any special symbolism or it's history since there is nothing written - for me it was simply a pretty place. It is an operating chapel, so please respect those who are there to worship. We entered silently, sat quietly in the back, and took 2 non-flash photos which didn't include any of the worshipers. It was easy to walk to in town if you are able to find a decent tourist map to use. It's just off the square across from the fort along the waterfront. The square is attractive with plane trees and the mosaic cobble stones which make Ponta Delgada special.
I grew up hearing about this image from my grandmother. When I arrived in the Ponta Delgada, this was my first stop. To say I was moved is an understatement. The church itself is unbelievably beautiful. As for the image, it is even larger than I had imagined, presented in all its glory and beauty. It is all my grandmother described to me and more! Don't miss this!
The reverence of the people to the image of Santo Christo, and their devotion, had quite an impact on me. The deep faith shown by the people in the chapel was memorable. It was impossible to not feel their holiness. Within the convent, there are also exhibits which show many beautiful articles and artifacts related to the history of the Santo Christo image.
It is just one of those churchs that you can feel the vibe and you feel very emotional and in touch with your feelings! The craftsmen work is beautiful and the whole story behind everything is wonderful!
A very special presence pervades this church. It is very much alive with all the energy that has gone into it for about four centuries. I found it by accident. As soon as I stepped in, I knew I had come in touch with that sense of peace we instinctively and intuitively seek, even if we don't realize that is what we are seeking. It was quiet, calm, understated in appearance, but it all seemed so perfect, in a humble and yet elegant way. It is Beauty. It is beautiful. Please take the time to step into this sacred atmosphere that gives much more than it takes. Also the visiting hour from 5:30 to 6:30 when you can see the Santo Cristo statue up close is well worth the visit.
It is something i can explain.so peaceful .i had see so many programs about azores ,and festivals in Igreja Santo Cristo ,but been there myself it is a dream come true..
This is a very beautiful Church. It is still a working Church so people should be considerate of locals that are worshipping within the Church. It was sad to see that tourists were ignoring the no photograph signage.
One of the most beautiful churches I've ever seen, also one of the only non-active churches on the islands. Igreja do Santo Cristo is officially a museum, the entire building is a work of art, the incredible details in the display just stunning.
We go Azores every year just to attend a Feast Of Senhor Santo Christo. That is main reason of many thousands of people to S.Miguel.the church is always packed to the outside.Being in church is peacefully, serenity,Divine, and never inside meditation. The decorations with the most beautiful flowers,There is no desire to leave the Presence of Devinity, the religious Statues, the art and history.Amazing.One should never miss.
If you want to see faith at its highest and religious procession with pomp and circumstance, visit this island in May. The image of Christ of the Miracles gets out of its church, which is one of the smallest in the city, and goes on a procession that takes about 3 hours through the streets of the city preceded by all types of incredible people wearing colorful garb and following by the faithful carrying candles and rosaries in gratitude for miracles received in their lives. There is so much to describe in the beauty of this event that I strongly recommend that you do take the time, someday, to be there in person to see it. People visit this event from all over the world. It takes 3-4 days an there is so much going on, you will never not have something to do. While in the island, take the time to see an incredible amount of unspoiled beauty. The weather can be warm of a bit chilly, but much better than in the USA at that time. Everything is in bloom, and that is why for this Christ of the Miracle processing all the streets are covered with geometric designs of colorful flowers and greenery in geometric designs. Most of the people in the processing walk away from the middle( close to the sidewalks) so that when the image passes, it will still go over fresh flowers. It's incredible!
