Santa Luzia is a mandatory stop if you go to Viana. I actually walked all the way up and it took me about an hour or so (and I was not tired at all by the end, we walked slowly and enjoyed the view). The church is simple but beautiful, but the view is just amazing, with the city, river and the ocean right there. If you want, you can use the elevator which only takes about 6 minutes to reach the church.
It's a relatively small sanctuary and also a place where the locals go for a Sunday strolls with the kids. It offers amazing views of the surrounding area.
Climbing up the tower may be a bit of an adventure on a busy day as the stairs are narrow for people to move in both directions... but its well worth the courage as the patchwork of plowed fields spreading out into the sea is one of the most unforgetable ones I have ever experienced.
This beautiful church is located on the top of a Hill.Besides being a lovely church inside, with an unusual shape, has wonderful views of Viana do Castelo, the river and the atlantic ocean. It is one of my favorite places in Viana.
As you arrive in Viana do Castelo in the top of the mountain you see de Basilica, and it looks wonderful! It's a wonderful architecture piece of art, very majestic and big, it's "the" must go in Viana do Castelo. And there's no fee!
This is one of the iconic portuguese catolic temples. A must go. No doubt. It has a wonerful view over Viana do Castelo City, over Minho River and the Sea Coast. Just Beautiful. No fees if you are only going to see the main church, but fees will be apllied if you want to go up and get a amanzing view from the top of the temple. Only 1€. I leave you a good tip. Choose the higher elevation (60 m) instead of the 30 m. The price is the same but if you choose 60m options you might forget the other.Service has to be better. If you go in August there's a lot of people and it might take hours to visit this place, if you go like in November no one will give you the deserved attention.
we visited the basilica around sunset. amazing view of Viana do Castello, in a golden light of the sun set. The church is lovely as well and you can buy nice, Portuguese coockies from little booths.
It is worth the drive up the mountain to see this lovely church, the park around it and the view toward the river and ocean.
When you recover from the walk up the steps and enter this domed church, it allows you a moment of reflection, especially when we were there a service was in full flow. Do spend time loitering around before descending
As most Minho towns, Viana also features a hill Sanctuary overlooking the city. Santa Luzia has beautiful views of the city, Minho river and the ocean. The Sanctuary itself is great and also provides higher views when climbing up the towers. There's also a park and an hotel in the surroundings, much like Bom Jesus in Braga. Do take the funicular to the top, parking is very limited up there and many buses stall the traffic at all times.
I went and enjoyed it thoroughly, fantastic view and amazing church!!! Besides being on the top of the hill right next to viana do castelo, the basilica is wonderfull. Simple, yet grandiose, it is the cherry on the cake!!!
One of the greatest scenic views ever!!! Right in front of a beautiful church, with spectacular stained glass and imposing walls. If you are in the region you have to come here. P.S. it's not worth the extra euro they charge on the side of the church for the climb up...
We took the funicular (longest in Portugal) with convenient parking next door. Others appeared to have driven up to the top of the hill without difficulty (we saw 2 tourist buses up there.) This has one of the best views of its town in Europe.
Take the Funicolar up to the top of Saint Lucia, yust behind the railway station and the old city.It is the easiest way up. The Basilica itself is nice, but not one of the greatest to have a look around. The view over the country site is great.
Gorgeous church. The view from the church roof top is a must see. Don't forget to take your camera, Or your going to regret it.
