Learn how bravely the Dutch people resisted the Nazi onslaught at home, their protection of and help to their Jewish countrymen and their fight against the Japanese in what is now Indonesia.
This Museum was the last on my museum stops and really should have just seamlessly moved with the Jewish Quarter museums to round out the total story. (after all the Jewish Quarter I was exhausted but should have continued on.--So I highly recommend it) Once again, the interactive nature of the exhibition helped you to be part of the Resistance Movement..even as the other interactive museums have brought you into these parts of the Dutch Historys. This museum helps to outline how the Dutch people were taken by surprise with the German invasion, and then how the resistance developed. These heroes nearly always sacrificed their own lives and desperately tried to save the children. It was incredible. And then, the children themselves formed their own resistance patterns (the Junior Resistance temporary exhibition) and then the children who were sent to the country (because they were starving) I have had a hard time understanding this history, but these museums and this one in particular help to describe the Dutch belief that flooding the land through the dykes would save them from entry, yet they were not ready for air travel and paratrooping in the German troops. Humbling. Well presented. Thank you Amsterdam.
A very informative adn well illustrated exhibition where children (between 10-12 years old) can experience what it would have bee to live in Holland during WW II.he story of 4 children is told who had a totally different experience. One Jewish girl, one son of a resistance man, one daughter of a collaborator and one son of someone who acted like the dutch majority and did neither resist or collaborate.
A thought provoking and fascinating museum which deals honestly with difficult issues. Well worth a visit.
This is not the usual war museum. As Holland was occupied fairly early in the conflict, this museum concentrates on the dilemma of having to live under an oppressor. The free audio guides do give more information than is contained on the exhibits and works off an RF chip, so you can take a walk through at your own pace. We spent nearly 4 hours there and it was very thought-provoking.
It reveals very honestly the dilemmas of an an occupied state which had many links to Germany although not to the Nazis. The exportation of the Jews seems to have been the turning point.
Fascinating accounts of life in nazi-occupied Amsterdam. So much to see and so much detail, you could spend hours here.
Very good museum, well worth a visit. Some excellent photos and a very stirring presentation. Good facilities to drop off your bag etc and very helpful staff
A decorum of imitation streets and wall-sized color photographs evokes the atmosphere of the war years. Authentic artifacts, photos and documents , film and audio clips tell the story of people in wartime. But there is more.... special for the youth. Youngsters can step in another world and another time. Use the time machine to the Netherlands during the waryears and sympathize with Eva , John, Nelly and Henk . Eva is Jewish , Jan has parents in the resistance, Nelly is in the youth club of the Dutch Nazi party and Henk comes from an ordinary family. In Resistance Junior young people can get acquainted with the poignant period of recent Dutch history. The Resistance Museum tells a story that is important and remains important.
A good museum to go to give a very in-depth view of what was going on in Holland before and during the war at 10euros per person I did think it was a bit expensive
