Paid a senior ticket price of £8.75 for my timed tour. Had a period costumed male guide who was interesting. Lots of steep steps in a spiral shape to climb up the tower but a great view from the top. Found the underground crypt a bit spooky and kept in the middle of our party! You could go back after the tour but not me! The museum could have done with things to look at like torture instruments etc but was mainly things to read.
We had a fabulous tour of the castle and prison. The guide was very knowledgeable and full of stories. It was very interesting. We would recommend to families and adults alike.
I visited here with a friend on 12-3-15 (15.40 tour) and our costumed guide "Black Bessie". She really brought her character alive and threw herself into her spiel. Full of energy and didn't flinch even when my friend flashed her camera while she was in full flow! (Well, she did but she then found a way to incorporate it into her tour, staying in character the whole time)The view from the top of the tower was incredible, although we hadn't been warned how many stairs we'd have to climb! The crypt was interesting although we weren't warned about that either!!All in all the tour itself was absolutely fantastic and we both thoroughly enjoyed it, even though my friend doesn't like spiral stairs or underground spaces!!The museum itself was interesting but after the amazing your felt like a bit of a let down, hence only 4. Don't get me wrong it was fascinating but it felt a bit added in to fill a space. Perhaps our wonderful tour guide did such a good job that we were just blown right away and unable to appreciate the museum!
Loved the remains of the castle and the tour. A bit pricey for a 20 min tour, but if you like history especially civil war stuff or prison architecture, you won't resent it.A lot of narrow steps, probably steeper than the tower of London so be prepared for this. The underground haunted crypt was a wow moment. The ancient mound was also included in the price. Muddy and gravelly in places. The views were a let down as the city scape of Oxford has changed dramatically over the years. Those with vertigo or hyperactive children must avoid.
It rained solidly throughout our visit but as much of this was under cover, it didn't matter. We visited here during half term week but despite this, it wasn't too busy. As it was half term, we had a series of guides dressed in period costume to show and tell about the castle and its history - they were all excellent and really showed enthusiasm for their subject and their characters. Overall an enjoyable introduction to the castle, worth a visit especially if you get the reduced rate tickets from staying at Malmaison next door.
A nice attraction that provides a lot of information via the fun method of costumed guides who take you round various parts of the castle/prison, from the top of St George's Tower to the supposedly haunted vaults.
We visited Oxford castle last week we were looking forward to the visit .we paid the£12.50 each and were told that it was guided tour only. We were more than happy with this.Once inside the first level our guide gave us a short talk , it was only then that we were informed that there was 101 steps up a spiral staircase and no other way to the other exhibits. As we both have medical conditions we voiced our concerns . The guide was most sympathetic and said we could drop out and watch a tv documentary . However 2 in the party had to drop out quarter of the way up ., and we were struggling .we asked at the desk why there we no signs about the steps before we paid and were told that we had been told on level one ! What good is that after we had paid £25 !! We spoke to the couple that had dropped out and they were not offered any refund . This issue needs addressing , how much money is the castle taking when people cannot see any of the exhibits without the climb ? Having said all this free born John ,our guide, was informative and entertaining .
Oxford castle unlocked is a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting place to visit. The thing that makes it so good is the tour guides who are all dressed in costume from the various phases of its history. They each take it in turn to explain what the various rooms were used for and what conditions were like at the time.Lots of fascinating stories and live demos of the way prisoners were treated as I found out to my cost when I was put into the stocks! There is also an interactive section which is well worth spending some time at. Its a great place to visit, especially on a rainy day!
This is a guided tour - in our case with a small group - around the castle and prison with a chance to climb the tower. The guides are in costume and knowledgeable. Worth the visit and there are plenty of places to eat nearby.
We visited @ 4pm on a Tuesday & joined 5 others on a guided tourOur guide was captivating as a highwayman ghost & remained in character throughoutThe view from the top of the tower was well worth the climb & the information boards held fascinating historical facts - very good value!!
My wife and I did a day trip to Oxford. We did the park and ride from Thornhill Car park which cost £2 for 11 hours. The buses run into town every 15 min. We got our tickets for Oxford Castle unlocked from Amazon local. On arrival we were given the escorted tour and our guide was very good and knowledgeable. You get a good view from the top of the castle but the climb up steep steps would be difficult for the less able. All in all it was a good day out and well worth the visit.
My grandmother booked us a ticket off Amazon Local and so we ventured up for the day. The tour was excellently taken by an Elizabeth Lilburn. The tour was informative, well taken and just long enough. Any longer would probably have been excessive but it was perfectly done. There is time at the end to explore yourself as well, which I thoroughly enjoyed.Well worth it!
A visit to Oxford Castle (to take a tour around the environs) was both informative and entertaining. The subject matter of the guided tour revealed what life was like for the castle's former 'residents' (dating from way back in history up to the modern era) and was excellently delivered by a costumed tour guide. Both my granddaughter and myself found the whole experience very interesting and there were no restrictions on using a camera in order to record our visit. We did not, however, climb the mound as the weather dictated otherwise. So, unfortunately, I cannot comment on this part of the tour - only to say that you may be advised to wear stout shoes .We gained entry via the use of a pre-purchased voucher and found it to be worth every penny!
What a great place to visit with loads of history and a really engaging tour with around 4 different actors. The tour took about an hour and there are quite a few steps but well worth it. The actors were excellent and dressed and played their parts really well. We used tesco clubcard vouchers so it felt even more value for money. The attraction is suitable for all ages..
I found out about visiting Oxford Castle through a special offer on travel zoo (2 adult tickets for £16). You are paying for a guided tour of the castle by various different actors. The actors tried their best but there are no comparison to those you might see at The Dungeons. The tour lasts approximately an hour and tells you about the history of the castle as a prison. The tour lacked a theatrical element and did feel a little like a school trip. If you are interested in the history it's worth a visit but it will not be somewhere I will rush back to.Overall an average attraction
