Decided to take a family trip out to have a look at the Manchester Museum and it was great. So much to see and do, a wide range of items on display too - my particular favourite was the elephant Maharajah who was bought in Edinburgh and couldn't be transported to Manchester on the train because he didn't like it - so he walked and it took 10 days.It is a big space to walk around and it will take a good couple of hours, some sore feet and an aching back (especially when 7 months pregnant!) so be prepared for sit downs and wear comfy shoes. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable, the facilities were great with a lift and wheel chair access and a cafe.Definitely worth a visit and take the kiddies to see the T-Rex skeleton...it's huge!
My son visited the Manchester Museum with his school and have a brilliant day out. The Egyptian section really captured his imagination and he was bursting with information at the end of the day. He was able to spend some pocket money at the museum shop which represented great value for money.
The Manchester Museum is a great day out, with a startling range of varied and extensive collections. The Egyptian section is particularly impressive, with its very well preserved mummies. The T-Rex, Stan, is also a great piece.
Had a great day out with the family. Absolutely worth a visit!! So many different sections that I looked at and my children loved it
Our main objective, as we were visiting a biology student, was to see the display of live frogs in the vivarium. There were several different species, also lizards, geckos and my favourite species of snake. They seemed extremely well looked after in nice display tanks, and were fascinating to watch, as always. I had not realised that we'd also have the chance to see very good displays of fossils/skeletons/stuffed animals (a NZ moa, for instance; a cassowary; the obligatory brown and polar bears; a huge tiger) all very well laid out and explained, not at all like the dismal mangy masses of stuffed animals you sometimes get in museums. This display felt respectful of our fellow creatures, even the butterfly collections which I usually hate. I liked how a lot of the fossil plants on display came from rocks in the immediate area round Manchester. We didn't spend particularly long in the anthropology and Egyptology sections, but I did like the feature on Flinders Petrie's excavations, which was of particular interest to me as I'd recently done some research on him. All in all, something for everybody and very nicely arranged. Don't miss the T Rex!
Myself and my boyfriend visited the museum because we quite enjoy history. We were actually surprised at the interesting things they had on offer. Some of the displays are set out in quite a unique and unusual way which is a nice touch. The museum is free but they do accept donations. I would recommend to donate because it helps out a lot there and I'm sure staff need to be paid! There's a wide range of exhibitions. The bigger things were a T Rex and a huge Asian Elephant. The only bad thing which wasn't the museums fault was that there were a lot of children climbing on and touching displays. This would be a shame if they were to be damaged. To prevent this there could be a couple more signs asking the public not to kindly not touch the displays - granted, it is the parents responsibility but at the end of the day it's best to try and protect the exhibitions! There's also a cafe next door incase you do get hungry although we did not visit there. The employees were very friendly. There's also some bits for the kids to do as I saw a colouring sort of workshop and there's different interactive things for them to do. All in all, pretty good couple of hours!
This was a first time visit and I only had time to see the Egyptian collection. This is extensive, very well displayed and explained, if a little disappointing after the glories of the collections in the British Museum and the Fitzwilliam in Cambridge. Certainly worth a visit though. Very good gift shop with plenty of variety.
I do not know Manchester at all and only stumbled upon this place while visiting the Uni. It was a bit like finding Aladdin's cave. I'm a sucker for a good museum and this one is small but perfectly formed. A little bit of natural history, a little bit of science, some decent ancient Egyptians, and even a live snake and some extraordinary frogs. Sadly didn't have time to explore fully but feel sure I will be back. Really enjoyed the modern displays, everything felt fresh not fussy and there was enough there to amuse people of all ages. Well organised, informed staff, and free.
This is a great place to visit when you go to Manchester. Full of interesting things quite futuristic. You could spend a long time in there but unfortunately I didn't have that long to spend it there so it was just a quick browse. Next time I visit I would like to spend half a day in there.
I have been visiting the museum since I was a child back in the 1950s and it still continues to amaze me. There has been a continual enhancement to both the buildings and the exhibits and it is still going on. During my last visit, the topmost floor of the main gallery was cordoned off so it was not possible to get the overhead view of the famous whale skeleton! This did not detract from the visit though and my nephew thoroughly enjoyed the experience. If you are seriously intending to do the museum justice, you need to spend at least a whole day here. An hour or so is very insufficient. The staff are very informative and the small café is reasonably priced and very popular. A great experience for young and old alike.
