First thing to know is that there is more than one bus station in Helsinki. that outside the railway station (split in two) and the underground one in the Kamppi shopping centre. the Porvoo bus leaves from Kamppi.Once there it is a dellightful old town with friendly shops and cafes, plus a stunning cathedral.
This was a stop off of our Oceana Marina cruise of the Baltic Sea. It was a very lovely little town with lots of shops and cafes. I loved the market and there were lots of beautiful and very colorful scarves to select from. We had a nice stroll around the littls town. The view of the river and town is very beatiful. Lots of old style architecture, cobblestones and very friendly and engaging people in the town, shops and cafes. You can even sit and just relax and people watch.
I went Porvoo during winter season, and it was quiet and quaint. I believe summer will be a more appropriate season to visit with more sun and brightness. I took around 3 hours to walk around the town including having a lunch at the restaurant - reindeer meat. Also do note that the bus station does not drop you off at the old town directly! You got to cross the Mannerheiminvayla bridge to the back to reach the old town. I spent quite a bit of time lost, thinking that I was already in old town.
I visited Porvoo in December of 2013. The town is absolutely adorable! It is hard to be disappointed with Porvoo's scenery, history, and charm. You can easily spend and entire day exploring the shops and narrow streets. Like everyone I came across in Finland, the shop owners were very nice and friendly. With a bit of walking you can see the majority of the town in one day.
Porvoo is a great day trip destination from Helsinki. There are frequent and comfortable buses departing from the basement of Kamppi shopping mall and metro station as well. The journey takes around one hour and you may experience fantastic winter scenes during the road. The old town is very nice, there are many craft shops, cafes and restaurants. In winter you may take excellent pictures. I highly recommend Porvoo day trip.
Old town is full of small shops and restaurants. Summer time river side is ver beautiful and also winter time old town is place to visit, beautiful small wooden houses , pls. Check also our church same time.
An old town easily reached from Helsinki. An ideal day trip. Nice shops and restaurants, prices lower than in Helsinki.
If you come to Finland, and you are staying at Helsinki, for instance, make sure to take a trip to Porvoo. The Town is full of history and just so beautiful! As you walk around these streets, it feels like the old times are mixing with the new!
Porvoo Old Town is only a few streets but the wooden shops and houses and cobbled square are lovely. We had ice-cream at Cafe Fanny on the square and watched people in the market. There are a number of attractive little shops selling lifestyle, vintage and typical Finnish products. The Church is beautiful and well worth a look for its painted wooden interior. As the nearest traditional Finnish town to Helsinki there are quite a few tourists. We went with our children but it's not really child-friendly and it would be nicer to be able to spend more time in the shops without worrying about inquisitive fingers touching things they shouldn't.
The Old Town in Porvo only comprises several square blocks. There are various shops and restaurants to be visited. The streets are cobble-stoned and make for the threat of turned ankles. We didn't go up the hill to see the Lutheran Church but the small area was enough to keep us busy. Porvo was founded in 1346 and is Finland's second oldest city. The old town has a central square. The new town is very evident and looks like most other small towns throughout the world. An attractive stream runs along the side of the old town and on into the hew town.It a very nice but small area.
An hour or so bus ride from Helsinki, Porvoo is a charming yet up to date town on the water dating back to the 1300s. There are cobblestone streets with historic buildings. Take a self guided walking tour, visit the home of Johan Ludvig Ruenberg (Finland's National Poet) as well as is Son's, who was a sculptor. Admission to both homes for one price. Explore the Art Factory, a former tractor factory that is an art complex for visual and performing arts complete with galleries, studios, theatre and restaurants. We had lunch there at Restaurant Vitriini. A small modern shopping center is next door. Walk along the water and have a drink or snack on one of the old converted ships. There are several fine restaurants as well as casual dining places in town.Lovely galleries and local craft shops. All in all a most pleasant day
I'm so glad I went to the effort to visit Porvoo. I took the hour long bus from Kamppi in Helsinki to Porvoo and spent the day just walking around. I was also very lucky that I came on a beautiful summers day. This medieval town sits on the water, which is lined with red wooden houses, making the vista from the other side of the river just idyllic. I thoroughly recommend walking the full length of the town and getting lost amongst the cobbled roads. I also recommend the salt liquorice ice-cream that I found just off the town square.
Naturally the old town of Porvoo is very nice: cafeterias, shops, church and some people like museums. I prefer also the old castel hill. Just walking there. It's the next hill after church.
I guess you have heard about time machine, so i happy to make you happy saying that you go to the past from 2014 to...................Cozy streets and romantic atmoshere it's all about Vanha Porvoo where time is stopped.
Cute and small. Some cute cafe's to stop in, and a couple of bars with character (paahtimo and cellar cafe). An excellent chocolatier (pieni suklaatehdas) and other goodies to buy (brunberg). Some very good restaurants (SicaPelle, Johans, Timbaali, Vanha Laamanni), too. Lots of needless things to look at and maybe even buy especially for the ladies in the little shops. A wonderful place to stroll and take a brake from a busy city life.
