The heading says it all. The mine tour is apparently the thing not to miss. The rest of the museum is small, although interesting. Apparently the mine is closed in the winter so plan accordingly and check the website.

I had no idea that Kutna Hora was so full of history. The mine is a fascinating piece of history and thoroughly enjoyed it. You have to take the tour to get the full aspect of what when on. The only disappointing thing is, we were not allowed to take pictures.

This museum will answer all the questions you might have about the production of silver. Also about a little known fact which is that the Czech Republic was a major producer of silver for many years. This site is highly informative and educational. I highly recommend a visit

This museum gives an excellent tour with displays on how silver was mined, refined and minted. It includes a walk through the upper part of the silver mine that is not for people afraid of confined spaces, it is very narrow and requires ducking to get through part of it.

Although we couldn't go to the mine tour, which was the main reason (apart from the Bone Churc) for including Kutna Hora on our itinerary, I would rate this "Very good" for the amount of information and the extremely helpful staff. Very sadly, we reached the place late, had a bit of trouble finding it on the (paper) map which added significantly to the delayThe trips into the mine last 1.5hrs and the last trip is at 14:30. The museum itself closes at 16:00, so would suggest to plan your day accordingly. That said about the Museum, once u exit this Museum, if you want to visit Arch-Deanery Church of St. Jacob, just take a right on the first winding lane to walk by one of the most beautiful old town lanes - narrow, cobbled, curved, colorful leaves drooping by, tiny wooden windows on stone buildings ...albeit short, this lane is a delight to walk in if u like some rustic scenes; straight out of 13th century and looks like technology hasn't reached here. This route would lead you to the back entrance of the church. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

If you want to learn more about the silver mining history of this town, this is a place to go. You can buy two types of tickets- one to visit the house, and another to visit the actual caves. We chose the second one. This tour lasts about 1.5 hours. Once you buy the tickets, you are part of a group. The guide explains some of the history- however only in Czech. I was a bit dissappointed that while the guide was talking, the English speakers had to read the translation. The guide only talked in english to let us know when we would go down I the caves. Everything is very well organised as everyone gets a helmet, a lamp and a blouse. Visiting the mines is a unique experience! We got to walk along several mine corridors, see some pools of water, the slides by which the miners brought down equipment, etc. worth doing despite not speaking Czech!

I love silver and this was interesting excursion for me, Place where silver coins used to be produced, Really loved all the history of this place.

I was aware of the silver mining heritage of Kutna Hora and upon discovering we could actually go down the mines there was no choice but to sign up. The tour costs around k150 and lasts 1.5 hours so is excellent value.Once the tickets were purchased and we had arrived at our allotted time, it began to dawn on us that the whole thing might be a terrible idea.. You are given a hard hat, a white overall and a 1960s torch (car battery powered of course) and warned that if you suffer from claustrophobia, bad eye sight or a bad back you should not take part. Given that I suffer from all these things in varying degrees I did have some doubts, but we'd already bought the tickets so I thought I'd have a go. It was brilliant! You descend 50m down a modern shaft to the medieval mine passages, then proceed through a series of tunnels. At some points the passageway is just 40cm wide and low enough that you have to double over - the hard hat was a necessity. It is also quite wet in the tunnels and, although some planks have been laid to walk on, solid boots or shoes with decent grip will help.Down in the mine you begin to get a feel of the horrendous conditions suffered by medieval miners, I cannot imagine anything worse than being stuck down there chipping away at the ore with only a tiny candle.. Apparently the miners would set fires in the tunnels to help crack the rocks; what a absolute nightmare. You also get a sense of the scale of the mines, the tunnels run far deeper than anyone has been able to assess. If you are visiting Kutna Hora I cannot recommend this tour enough, it truly was a great experience and one of the highlights of our trip to the Czech Republic! Although be aware that when you buy the tickets they don't warn you might find it tough if you are young or old, if you have any mobility trouble, or if you have a genuine fear of confined spaces.

first thing and most importent: come with a relaxed attitude and in a good mood...the tour itself is about 35-45 minuts. the explanation take about 1 hour, and probebly will be in czech.most of the tours are with czech speaking guides. but you can catch some in englise. just make sure to ask befor you arive (and if you can: book in advance)but we got a leaflet in english that explain the main stations of the tour (the crosses on the walls symbols of unfortunate miner...for example) and most of the time just follow the heard. look at the rest of our group and did what they do. and our guide also gave short comments in english just for us. so it was ok.worth spending a few hours when in kutna hora. and a little of the bitten route for foriegn tourists.

The tour through the narrow mine is well worth doing it, but the explanation before and after could easely be done in 10 minutes, but took 1 hr. Extensive eleborations on a medieval painting took 10 minutes by itself. The information transfer would be much more effective if it was condensed 6 times.Still, the mine itself gives a good look and feel of what the miners had to endure. The passages are very narrow and the stops very small. Therefore it might be a suggestion to reduce the group size by 10 or 20 %. So maybe a duration decrease creates space for a group size reduction

I spent a day visiting Kutna Hora with the Silver Museum being one of the things I was most looking forward to. I was cautious after reading reviews so made sure I would get an English tour, otherwise it wouldn't be worth it. I went over around 11 am to ask about the tour, to be informed there was an English on at 1 pm. I said okay and went back at 12:30 to be told it was sold out. Why on earth was I not told I could reserve my place earlier that day! I was very annoyed and turned down the Czech tours. Make sure you get there early or go online to reserve to avoid feeling disappointed.

The museum is interesting indeed, but it would be nice to cater a bit more for their tourists and describe their exhibition objects not only in Czech but also in one or two different languages. All they give you on a tour is a booklet describing the objects in English, Russian or German, but somehow it did not fit what you saw and what the guide was telling you.

we really enjoyed this tour in an old silvermine, about 35 meters underground. the guides where very nice and were able to answer all the questions. the mine itself is damp/wet, small, low and not suitable if you have any kind of health problems, claustrophobia or walking difficulties, and in all honesty, dont go down if you are a big lady/man. im a UK lady size 14 and i think being much bigger would have been a problem in the narrowest parts.

It was a very nice guided tour. The guide spoke a very good English. You can book a tour ahead on their website. It will be a very fun tour for kids as well.
