Yup, it is a lot of bones arranged artistically. It was like an overly elaborate Halloween display...except the bones are real. Add to that the size of the place (small) and the numbers of people there (lots and lots), means it was hardly the quiet, respectful resting place it could have been. Am I glad I saw it? Yes. Is it all that? No. FYI: lots of stairs right at the door, so leave your stroller outside and take turns checking the place out. I take a ton of pictures, and even I wasn't there for more than 15 minutes.
I saw this chapel mentioned in a documentary many years ago, and have wanted to visit it ever since. I finally made it in Feb 2015; and it was well worth it. For those that are wary of it being morning or gruesome, it isn't. It is peaceful, and truly artistic. The bones are used very tastefully. I am not sure what it is like at peak tourist season, but when we went, we were amongst about 6 other people, so we had time to quietly take it all in. Very peaceful.
The Bone Church is a very beautiful place! There are couple of restaurants nearby, which is nice if you want to have lunch before heading back to Prague, like we did.
WOW!!!! I had seen it in movies and TV shows, but they don't do it justice...you MUST see this in person. Each corner is stacked with skulls and bones, a large chandelier containing one of each bone in the human body. About an hour outside of Prague ( your hotel can hook you up with the bus company ) and then on to Kutna Hora, a quaint town for lunch, shopping and a bit of sightseeing.
For certain people its is spooky because it was in the middle of the cemetery and its skull ornaments, but there is a entertainment across the street !Yes, the wine, yes, do not forget to prepare your empty bottle to try red or white wine which is sold by custom. The step as follows : from the gate of this church, across the street you will saw a shop, ice cream and coffee shop , yes there is available 'wine" by custom, how many you need 1 liter?, 2 Liters ? or 500 ml ? ,prepare your bottle, yeah such as mineral water bottle, ask and enjoy !
A simple chapel decorated fantastically, extravagantly, with 40,000 human bones (!)It’s hard to get more descriptive than that, you’ve got to see it to believe it. It’s gorgeous, honestly. And it’s part of a UNESCO protected site, so that tells you it’s not crackpot. One man created this in 1870 -- it’s an ossuary, as opposed to a catacomb. It’s an hour from Prague on the train, but at the last minute I had my hotel book me on a tour (all the hotels know all the tour companies, you don’t have to research it) that picked me up at the hotel, took us there, also took us to the cathedral nearby, and then back to Prague, with a guide. TOTALLY worth it – 5 hours, $50 -- and I didn’t have to wander around looking for the shuttle bus to the chapel from the middle of Kunta Hora etc etc etc.
While we were somewhat dubious as to how we would feel in the chapel, we are pleased to have gone. Small and yes full of bones, but more than that, a moving place. While we may think of it perhaps as creepy, think of the person who created it! Don't miss Kutna Hora the next town. While this says I visited in Nov 13, I was there actually in 2011, the page does not give that year for selection.
The huge experience. The Sedlec Ossuary also known as the Church of Bones is one of the most unusual chapels you will ever see. One of the most fascinating artistic works inside the Sedlec Ossuary is the big chandelier of bones that lies in the center of the Church of Bones. The immense chandelier contains at least one of every human bone.
This is not a big chapel, but it's a very special place that leaves you with a feeling that hard to describe in words. Hard to imagine that everything made with real people's bones.I think it's impossible to remain indifferent to the place. One can think of it as a very creepy place while another think of it as an interesting place with strange story and a value.Recommends to visit and experience place that no other like this.
This may be for some an interesting day-trip from Prague, together with the town of Kutna Hora, where it is located. On tourist guides, it looks more amazing than it actually is, but on this website, they've used the right word to descibe it: chapel, as the place is not so big. Still, impressive the way the bones are displayed.
I have been to Sedlec Ossuary several times and really enjoyed it. Inside is filled with many many human bones all artistically arranged around the chapel in 1870. There is a chandelier and a Schwarzenberg family coat of arms made out of bones amongst other designs. It is located about an hour outside of Prague on the train, and you can get direct trains here. It is also a very popular place to visit so out of season is better to avoid the crowds. The chapel is located about 10 minutes walk from the train station and there are cafes nearby. When visiting make sure to visit nearby Kutna Hora too, a beautiful place to walk around if it is nice weather.
It really is a fascinating place, lovely little place and the sculptures made of bone are quite amazing, not for everyone but I liked the place.
We went a couple of years ago and found this a bit creepy, but an interesting part of history. Not speaking the language made it a bit difficult finding the right train, but we made it. We had lunch at an Italian restaurant that was actually quite good. Can't say the same for a "Mexican" restaurant we ate at in Cesky Krumlov. We suspect that they saw the green guacamole and thought it was spinach.
Sedlec ossuary in Kutna Hora is an easy day-trip away from Prague. Building is located on the outskirts of small town. Building itself is a typical small late gothic structure, but the inside of the shrine makes all the difference. We were there during off-season, so not too many people then. I'd imagine that during season the place is easily filled with tourists. Bone decorations are skilfully made and atmosphere is weird but hauntingly beautiful. A must see for all who write traditional horror fiction. From ossuary it is mostly a nice walk to the center of Kutna Hora (if you like walks longer than few blocks), where you find many nice restaurants.
As advertised, the ossuary is a church decorated with human bones artistically displayed. There are piles of bones, a chandelier made of bones, a large crest made of bones and much more. It is kind of a creepy place but interesting. We were there in the off season and it was decently busy so I imagine it gets really busy sometimes in the high season. My sister is a physiotherapist and she loved it there. It was a short walk from the train station and then you can walk or take the shuttle into Kutna Hora. I would recommend going if you are interested in the human body and the like. It's only about an hour outside of Prague
