The visit to this winery was my favorite activity on the excellent Rick Steves tour from which we just returned. The brothers and their father have created a very special place on Mt. Etna. Luckily, the rain stopped and we were able to walk up to the oldest sector of the winery's vineyards and see the amazingly old vines. The explanation about how the vines are cultivated and the grapes picked was excellent. And the wine from this oldest section was superb. After the tour, we enjoyed an excellent meal, accompanied by even more excellent wine. The hospitality was exceptional. We wish the family the best in their winemaking endeavors. We will be recommending their wines and a visit to their winery.
We had heard from a friend the night before that Benanti winery is one of the best in the area. Unfortunately, we were not staying nearby, but decided to stop by anyway. Valentina greeted us and informed us that the tour had already left. We wish we had another day to attend, but we didn't. Instead, she gave us the attention shown to any tour and allowed us to sample some bottles. Such composure and hospitality for an unexpected event. I do recommend booking beforehand and getting the full Benanti experience, but the handling of our case was exceptional. We ended up buying 4 bottles for the rest of our journey. Many thanks and make sure to visit!
We were part of a Rick Steve's tour, and had the pleasure of spending a few wonderful hours at the Benanti Winery. The grounds are beautiful, we had a lovely tour of the vineyards by one of the brothers, and then delighted in a wine tasting that was fabulous. The food, the wine, the setting, the entire experience was unforgettable. All of us on the tour bought wine, and for the rest do the tour we would spend our evenings sipping on some of the best wine I have ever tasted!
We are a young couple ( Dutch and Spanish) who were in Sicily for 10 days. We can say that visiting Benanti winery was one of our best experiences in the island. It doesnt matter if you dont know about wines, the charming welcome, the beautyful place and the explanations of Laura ( who infected us with her passion for wines from the first minute) make this visit unforgetable. The excelent wine they have is just only one of the thousand great thinks you will experience there. Everytime we remember our time in Sicily we will think in our tour at Benanti.
We had a fantastic vineyard tour and talk about Etna wines with Antonio, one of the two brothers who now run the Benanti family winery. I thought we were perhaps getting so much of Antonio's time and attention followed by a delicious light lunch (with more tasting and converstaion with Valentina the sommelier) because we had come via a recommendation from a friend. However reading the other reviews now I see that everyone who visits feels that they are getting a special tour just for them! Which confirms my feeling that Antonio (who has excellent English) is absolutely in the right place - he loves his wines but he also loves hospitality and sharing knowledge about wine and he loves meeting people. Valentina was also charming and highly knowledgeable! Getting there - there is no sign outside the vineyard - watch for the simple iron gates and the small number 361 - also don't be suprised that there are regular houses on the other side of the street - vineyard on one side, suburb on the other!
We had a wonderful afternoon at Benanti as part of our honeymoon. Salvino could not have been more helpful, generous or engaging. He clearly feels very passionately about what he does, and strives for the highest standards. Given this, you might expect a reluctant attitude towards tourists distracting him from his primary job of making world class wines. Nothing could be further from the truth. He took time not only to answer any questions we had during a relaxed afternoon sampling plenty of wine and delicious homely food, but provide suggested local accommodation, transport to the event and made special arrangements to make our honeymoon more special. This tour is simply a must for any visit to Sicily.
We visited Benanti with 2 other couples. We toured the vineyards, saw how wine was made in the past and then had a lovely lunch while tasting 8 Benanti wines, which were fabulous. We thoroughly enjoyed the education we received from Antonio and Salvino, not to mention their charming and engaging personalities. They're well educated, worldly yet down-to-earth, and extremely passionate about their winery. We spent 4 hours there and we all purchased several bottles of their unique Etna wines. Our friends even arranged for a case to be shipped back to Toronto. When we return to Sicily, which we most definitely will, we'll most certainly go back for another visit.
We visited the winery and had a great visit. Salvino, Antonio and Valentino were perfect hosts and very informative. They allowed us to visit their vineyard, sharing their passion and knowledge for their wines and were the perfect hosts. We had a special request to sample their grappa along with their lovely wines and they did not disappoint. We had a lovely lunch, nice wine and we were made to feel so welcome. It is definitely worth a visit.
After meeting Salvino one of the winemakers, at a wine bar in Taormina. He told me to email him to set up a tasting at his vineyard. we arrived at 11am and were greeted by Salvino & Valentina his on site sommelier. He quickly opened us a bottle of Brut and talked about his wines and his time living in NJ. He then had business with his twin brother the other winemaker and left us in the capable hands of Valentina. We walked up the south side of Etna at about 400 meters through the vineyards. She was very good at explaining all the different techniques used and the variety of grapes, which she told us they use only indigenous grapes of Sicilia. After about an hour of casually strolling we headed to the tasting room. Valentina bought out our lunch to go with the wines. She poured us 1 white, 2 reds and 2 Etna Rossos. She perfectly matched each wine to either a cheese or salami. I could see why she has chosen to be a sommelier after a long career in basketball which was very cool to hear.We met Salvino as we were finishing up and talked about our next destinations in Sicily. He wrote a list of restaurants in all the cities we were visiting and even had his brother email us about ones in Marsala. I must say everyone we went to was spot and and very good also very LOCAL which we always love being the only Americans in a place with all Italians!Valentina jumped in and said you must try my restaurant in Siracusa where she works on weekends. Also, she was going to be in Siracusa at another restaurant for a wine tasting dinner and said it should be very good, with a couple of famous chefs from the area cooking. As it turned out we tried her restaurant and it was great! But even better was the wine dinner as it was my birthday and Valentina was serving us our wines and just made it special with her charming personality!Grazie Mille to the Benanti twins and a special grazie to Valentina!
My husband met Salvino in Taormina the Friday before we visited so we arranged via email our Monday visit. The visit consisted of just the two of us and we were guided through the property and the tasting by Valentina. Valentina is just wonderful and is extremely knowledgeable about Etna wines! We started the visit with a glass of Brut (delicious by the way) and a brief overview of the Cantina. We took a walk in the vineyards behind the house and talked about the different grapes they grow. There is an old barn (for lack of a better word) that is like a museum of how the wine used to be pressed and learned about how they used to make they wine.Afterwards we sat down to a tasting accompanied by meats, cheeses, olives and vegetables local to Sicily. We tasted each wine with what Valentina though brought out the best characteristics of the wine (and she was spot on!)Everything was great and I would definitely recommend visiting this up and coming Etna winery! Salvino, Valentina and Antonio not only made our visit great, they also provided us with various recommendations of restaurants and even a wine dinner in Siracusa that made our entire trip even better! Thank you all!!!
