Great collection of work. The pollock 'alchemy' interactive exhibition was a great touch and the technology is easy to interact with. A must visit if you're into contemporary art and in Venice.
I'd read an excellent biography on Peggy Guggenheim the week before I visited her collection (Art Lover by Anton Gill), and to say it hugely enriched my visit would be a gross understatement. I confess, I knew (know) very little about modern art before reading it, but the detailed descriptions of many of the pieces in the collection, along with the history behind them, and how Peggy Guggenheim came into possession of them, added to the whole experience. Some of the rooms have photograph of Peggy Guggenheim in the palazzo during the time she lived there, which helps to visualise what it looked like back then. I thoroughly enjoyed viewing her collection, and it made a nice change from the dark, heavy sombre art of the Palazzo Ducale and Ca' Rezzonico (which I'd visited beforehand). Peggy Guggenheim herself is buried in one corner of the sculpture garden, beside her dogs. When I was there, there was a special exhibition of Jackson Pollock's Alchemy, and part of the display was a 3D printout of the piece, which you're allowed to touch. All in all, well worth the €16 entrance fee.
The art pieces were tastefully selected, and well represented from big names in modern art such as Miro, Picasso etc. Short guided tour by intern for the English speaking visitors provided interesting insights to Jackson Pollock's masterpiece 'Alchemy'. Garden is lovely and backdoor on the other side of the house provides great views of the canal.
Going to the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York, followed by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice (and then the modern art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art back in New York) is quite the modern art tour. It was interesting to see the artists represented in all three. The sculpture garden was lovely, and the palazzo itself is very interesting. We particularly enjoyed the presentations by the interns.
Fantastic collection of art and sculpture. Recommend the audio device to learn about the history of each piece. Jackson Pollock collection and story fascinating.
Small musuem - but a big experience. Take your time and pay 15 euro with a smile. Do not forget the small guide for a 5 euro.
Visited this museum mostly out of curiosity more than to appreciate the works of art inside. This is a beautiful house set at the edge of the grand canal with most rooms overlooking the water. The modern exterior provides a stark contrast to the rich antique palazzi. Quite a costly entrance fee for anyone who is not an art afficionado but well worth the visit.
I dont know why but i am not a fan of modern art. This week there we saw a Jackson Pollock master pièce " alchemy", it was interesting that Peggy was the one that Made Jackson so famous , there is a lot of info about the painting of this pièce. The restoration etc. It was an interesting place to see and i am happy i went , but cant honestly say its my cup of tea . I prefer traditional old style art.
If you like 20th century art you cannot miss this visit. Plan to be there for two hours at least, so you can calmly appreciate the works of art inside and outside this beautiful house. They ask you to leave your packs and bags at the entrance, but you can take your camera. Take also money, because there is a caffe inside. I recommend also renting the audioguide to hear the stories about Peggy and the artists she sponsored.
