Foreigners thinking about Greece always have islands and ancient temples in their minds. But there is so much more in this country, and the Neda waterfalls exemplify this. There are actually two sets of falls, the larger ones (where you can swim in the crystaline but freezing water) and the smaller ones (which you will pass on the way to the larger ones). There is also a tiny chapel along the hiking route - if it's open, feel free to light a candle inside. I agree with another reviewer that the Messinia route (from approximately Kalo Nero) is the best way there, because it has a better road. Most people park their cars at the top of a hill near the entrance to the site. If your car can take a beating from an unpaved and heavily potholed road, you'll find it more convenient to drive to the bottom. Most visitors arrive after 10am. It never gets really busy, but if you want solitude (and less heat), go there earlier.Make sure to visit the village of Platania for a drink or a meal, because both the village and the surroundings are astonishingly beautiful. Buy some local honey, too!
If you like walking and sight-seeing, then it's the place you should go. The sound of nature in its wildest form and you are one step away from it. When you reach the waterfalls, it's as if the landscape absorbs you and revivifies you. Words can't describe it thoroughly...When we "heavy heartedly" decided to took the way back, we followed the advice of Bia (the owner of the guesthouse "Epohes" in the nearby village, Abeliona, we stayed at) and looked for a local villager -unfortunately I can't recall his name- who had a vehicle with specially customized seats for carrying tired tourists like us to the top of the uphill! Too bad some other visitors didn't know that "service" and walked up all that way by foot. Well, or maybe I'm not that young anymore )) Nevertheless, it was an amazing experience!
lovely nature. it is recommended to have sport shoes since you will have to walk on stones. you can also swim.
The access to the waterfall is not very easy. However, it totally deserves your patience! Amazing scenery. Beautiful sounds and colors. You can swim in the water and feel really energized by the cold water! Amazing!Have a good pair of snickers with you!
one of the best, most magnificent places to visit in the greek countryside!your eyes wont believe what they see!its a must!!
The Neda, waterfalls with small ponds is ideal for a cool and refreshing break during the Holidays at Peloponnese. There is not much space around and the ponds are very small but you can swim in the largest of them. Avoid July-August period, too hard to even reach them.
If you happen to spend a few days at the area, you must visit Neda waterfalls. A few hundred meters before the waterfalls the road is quite rough, but it's worth it! Have a swim at the small lake and below the waterfall. Be prepared, the water is freezing cold! You may camp there for a night or two and spend time under the trees. By the way, it's the only river in Greece with a female name.
One of the best places i 've ever been.River waterfalls with natural carved pools. But it is difficult to get there. There are two different ways to get there, the Ilia way and the Mesinia way.I would suggest the Mesinia road, cause it has better road, especially for the last part. And it has more parking area.If you choose the Ilia way(from Figalia, couple of miles after Perivolia)you have to bear in mind that there are 3-4 miles with bad steep gravel track road with limited parking area at the end.At the end of the road, the foot path begins,it is about half a mile up and down a hill.Use shoes and not flaps.
Neda the only river in Greece with female name, belonging to a Nymph which brew Zeus, clear waters, magnificent landmark, virgin nature and archeological sites as Figaleia, Bassae or Temple of Epicurious Apollo. There is the second Gate to Hades in Ancient Greece. I recommend it if you want to meet your soul and then return to Earth.Near is near Stomio Cave with stalagmites, to reach it you have to walk 15 minutes and drive for 2 kilometres at dirty road.
It s a wonderful place, but not very well indicated. the road is in bad condition. You have to wear sport shoes...
It's ok just to see only the two lakes near Stomio (15min walking and 20 min of dirt road). But I strongly recommend some hiking either near the village Kouvelas, or from the bridge of Polydoras and a night stay in tent. Although requiring some kind of planning (two cars in the start and the end of the route or pickup from some local with a 4WD with a small fee) it's 100% worth the effort.
Nice views, good exercise - left the car in the village and hiked all the way down and up - 2 h walk up and down with 300 m height level difference. The info of the place is not very clear, can be greatly improved.
