first of you just need some hungarian friend:) so they invited me to have fun and lunch in a circle of lake balaton sides also tasting wonderfull california champaigne during the sailing and swimming
This huge lake is surrounded by nice beaches, bars, restaurants. Whether it's day or night there's plenty of fun to enjoy. 2 hours distance from Budapest, by train.
We were travelling from Zagreb to Budapest by road so decided to come off the motorway and follow Lake Balaton. Although interesting towns on route I did not get the great views I was expecting as the road tends to be to far away from the shoreline in most places. Occasionally we drove down to the shore but were not met with any great views, bit disappointing really anyway on with the trip there's many other great things to appreciate. Perhaps it's better on the northern side.
On the way back from Budapest we stopped in Siofok to take a look and walk along the coast of Lake Balaton. Siofok was already without tourists, most restaurants and shops closed, and we have found parking at the park by the lake with no problems:)Unfortunately, the weather was quite windy and overcast, so we could not fully enjoy in the natural beauty around us. Not even excursion boats were not driving so is left to make only a short walk along the coast and the muddy water of the lake.Still, even under such conditions, man can not but wonder to everything what surrounds him and what he sees. At Balaton we come again, probably the next spring.
We came here to take in the scenery. Alas, it is nothing much to write home about, at least for sightseeing.
I was in Budapest which is a very beautiful place with many castles and thermal baths but I also wanted to visit to Lake Balaton. I took train to the Lake and I was very happy I visited to Lake Balaton. I was at lake Balaton in August and a water was so clean and warm. I also visited to Szigliget Castle, Festecsis castle, Siofok and Balatonfured. I really wanted to go to Lake Heviz because it is the largest thermal lake in the word but we had no time for that. This Lake Offer so much ! We will go back next year that's for sure so maybe I will have time to go to Heviz or fishing and etc.... Thank you Hungary ! Danke Ungarn ! :)
Peaceful. Good walks. boat trips.hated the insects---do take lots of repellent. We were just out of season and beaches were free---Ususally a cafe open and also free toilets.
This Lake is the best in Hungary, it is so fresh clean and full of life. Plenty of tourists, locals and visitors. Lots of retaurants, cafes and pubs to choose from.Lots to see and do. Bathers are a must. Swimming, Sailing or just relaxing in the sun.
The lake itself is very nice: blue clear water, nice views, but all public beaches are either grassy or simple covered with concrete and there are lot of stones in water. Private beaches are better equipped, some resorts have artificial sandy beaches. We were there in July and water was still cold.
The lake is surrunded by very decent byking track. You can hire a bike in almost all larger cities. The trip will take 3-5 days with a lots of pleasent places to stop and relax. We made it quite easy, started at 8 in the morning and stopped at around 11, conitued from 2- 6. The accomodation is quite easy to fix. Suggest you prepare a list of phone numbers of the accomodations you will stay. That will be enough to call around 16 when you know how far you reach. There are a lots of small food and beverage" restaurants" addressed to the bikers. The accomodations cost about 15 - 18 EUR/pax and night. You can eat a 3 coars supper with vine or bear for 15 EUR. You will meet a lots of nice local people and biking mates on the way. Good motion, you do not need any advanced condition, just somewhat well trained back.
I hate cold water, and by cold I mean anything under 30ish degrees. Yet I truly enjoyed the Balaton lake in the area of Tihany. Shallow, clean, still water, absolutely perfect...except of course for the occasional locals trying to make a quick buck with no work involved. But this is why I come here to share my little tips with you guys. For instance, you can swim for a fee, or you can swim for free, depending on whether you want to pay someone for absolutely nothing or not. Yours truly is not a friend of paying for the sake of paying, so this is what I did:First we went to the Marina where there were some bars and a guy asking for an entrance ticket. At first we thought the ticket was for a parking area, but since we parked on the street in front of it I felt this had nothing to do with us. Then he came to us and we understood that the ticket was for using the lake. Thanks but no thanks, we left and drove back to this other little place where, while there was no guy asking for money to swim, there was this girl asking for money to park! Since I found other fully free parking areas, we parked where it was free, walked 5 minutes, and then swim where it was free as well. And don't get me wrong, I have no problems paying as long as there is a service involved which I need it. On this particular date I did not need my plate number to be written on a piece of paper (the place was safe enough) nor I needed a guy at the entrance checking absolutely nothing. To honor the truth, there was a little first aid center in the Marina. Then again, I have my first aid kit in my car.Other than that, a fantastic place and very safe for kids.
A great place to enjoy summer weather. Beautiful lake with shallow water in the south which is great for kids, northern part with deeper water for adults. Plenty of programs to choose from for all ages.
We drove 6 hours to Lake Balaton from Italy for something different to do. We have a family of 5 with three kids under the age of 11 and a set of grandparents that traveled with us. We rented a 2 bedroom apartment right on the lake in Siofok from $390 for 2 nights, well worth it. The staff was great and the facilities were wonderful. There was an issue with billing but we resolved it in one day. The lake was great. Not overly crowded, the water was clean and just warm enough. There were cheap and yummy foods stands all around to grab lunch and snacks. You can rent kayaks or small boats with slides for the kids for cheap. Overall it was a great three days and two nights. On the day we checked out we were only an hour from Budapest so we drive there for the day before driving back to Italy. Hungary is a great place to visit and the prices can't be beat. Remember they have their own currency Hungarian Forint and most of the smaller places will only take Forint, so have some with you.
