Great Castle, 2 hours is perfect, great view on landmarks from the top of the hill. Worth to climb the hill for visiting it.
Very preciously renovated castle shows not just architectonical aspect of history, but try to show kind of lives our predecessors. You could take here your coup of tea as well buy small gift for memories. The village has tourist oriented infrastructure, which allows you spend the time any different kind, e.g. horse riding, wine testing, enjoying traditional cuisine.....
High on the hill is the medi evil castle which overlooks the pristine countryside of Sumeg and the surrounding areas. You can see the ancient weapons and lifestyles once lived by these proud people. You can either walk all the way up to the castle or take the shuttle mini van. Stroll around the castles lower grounds and drop into the gift shop and csarda (restaurant/pub). Children can play around the huge catapults and also pat and feed the donkeys. It is pleasant drive from Budapest and enjoy the views and attractions along the way.
We had never heard of this castle and came on it quite by chance as we drove down the road towards Lake Balaton. Quite simply the castle, perched on a high rocky outcrop (about 850 feet up!), is far too spectacular to ignore and an absolute must to visit. You can take a taxi up from the car park but to be honest, it isn't too much of a climb on the winding pathway. As expected, the views from the top are excellent and although there isn't a lot to see on the inside, there are a few interesting exhibits.A previous reviewer pointed out that you don't have to go into the village to gain access to the castle, and while this is true it is worth pointing out that with its cobbled streets and lots of free parking, it is a rather nice little village for a stroll and a bite to eat.
Perched on a hill top this imposing castle gives majestic views over the surrounding countryside. Down below there are great facilities for younger children and some reproduction guns, catapults and a play area of high quality. The restaurant on site is of very high quality and the menu was authentic in wonderful classical surroundings.
the view is very nice although the castle itself is not very interesting. looks like castle black in GOT :)i recommand to take the shuttles up and go down by foot.
The castle is accessible from the main road to Balaton, so don't drive into the village. It is nicely renovated with exhibits from the daily life of the original inhabitants. The view over the surrounding landscape from the top is astonishing. Most of the explanations and signs are also translated to English and German, so you don't really need a tour guide. You can rest your legs at the small café in the castle court.
We visited the castle as apart of the family program. All over we were very satisfied with the experience,, the view was breathtaking, we had very good time there. However I would like to point out that the tourguide was very disappointing and unproffesional. he charged us 3000HUF for seven person and it was not worth it at all. He had a very limited knowledge of the castle. Although the castle and the rooms have good information table in three languages. Please avoid the tour guide in the castle it is a waste of money.
A beautiful castle, with perfect views, and well renovated. One of the brightest diamond of the hungarian history, and can be visited not just once!
If you travel to lake Balaton (the western part), certainly make a stop in this small township. The castle is visible Castle silhouette (slopes of Bakony forest in the Veszprem county) is visible by far the Pannonian lowland. The castle from the 13-th century (king Belo IV) and cozy township with Bishop s Palace, Paris church, Franciscan church, Saddle and harness museum offer sufficient time for useful relaxation. The impresive is mainly time during sunset, because the town is located on the western slopes of mountains. Excellent coffee in one of the cafes will certainly be completed your well being.
Although there are many castle ruin in the area, Sumeg has the most advanced reconstruction and a wide range of folclore programmes are offered. Even if it is not a huge castle, wih the games and programmes on offer it is easy to spend half a day there with children.
You have to climb quite tough to get the top but it definitely worth it. If you got the right weather you can see the Balaton and even the Alpen on the Austrian border. In the castle you have a feeling of being in the middle age cannons, armors, horses, cold beer, turkey dancers :-) we had an amazing time we loved the castle !!
The castle is being renovated since 1989. It is nicely arranged. There is a lot to see there: towers, a torture room, a chapel, a big yard, armors, etc... There are even horses and goats up there. You have a fantastic view of the surrounding. You can watch an animation film about the Mohács battle. I advise to everyone to go there.
After the poor medieval show, there is a dinner in a medieval way, only by hands and the food and wine are really good. Enjoy.
Not too far from our base in Heviz, we took a drive to Sumeg castle what a lovely countryside. The castle itself is nicely restored and with good information, the activities are great fun for the family, for an extra cost you can choose to see the knights show across the street, we didn't so I can't comment but the castle is a lovely place to go for a day out.
