I really recomment you to visit "Arte Nativo", only a couple of blocks to the Plaza 9 de Julio, you will find there the best and trully artcrafts, with very good and attentive assistance from the guys there.
...but worth a visit, especially in the morning when all of the vendors are setting up their wares around the perimeter of the square.
A very simple yet functional square in the middle of the village. Of course the strong asset of the square is the artisan's market. Be sure to make enough circles around the stalls and shops to compare prices and products.
Besides Humahuaca, Purmamarca is probably one of the nicer towns we have been to in the Salta-Jujuy region. There is a quiet town square, predominantly lined with souvenir shops. The small church with its ancient tree is worth a visit too. Ask about climbing the nearby hills for fantastic views of the town and the surrounding colorful mountains. Also, do all your souvenir shopping here as most items go for something like 40 percent less than those sold in Salta. The same items sold in Salta are also sold in Purmamarca.
You'll probably see the same stuff all over northern Argentina, but this was the biggest collection of artesenia and souvenirs I've seen. There are some galleries off the main street too.
The "plaza" is very small but if you come to Purmamarca you have no other option than to visit it :-) It's not as if the town was big...Nice photos to be taken of the streets, of the nearby church. We could find some well-priced souvenirs in the real shops and in the street-shops. Like anywhere some sellers are nicer than others, and don't try to bargain too much, that's not the spirit.
Don' t spend more than 30' on it !! Take some and your family Will be happy. Most important, get lost thru the little street and enjoy.
