I actually climbed Villarica on New Years Day. The ski lift wasn't operating and our van got stuck about a mile from the volcano. We took off on our trek which turned into over 10 hours. What a day! Despite numerous asthma attacks and no lunch (funny stories behind both), I loved this climb. Further, I loved the slide down. Yes, you got it; we slid down the volcano about two miles. No sledding hill could ever compare! This was one of my favorite activities ever and i was very saddened when I found out that Villarica recently erupted. I truly loved my time in Pucon and would definitely return... And climb the volcano again with food and without trying to run.
First of all, its a volcano, not a mount, and it is active. It had an eruption a few days ago. Fortunately a "small" one. This days its in red alert, so you cant go closer than 10km. Normaly you can go to the summit, see the caves on the side close to Pucón, camp in the forest or make a path around it. Its a beautiful Volcano with many activities to do.
The view is magnificent. Unfortunately there was a yellow alert and travellers were not allowed to climb the mountain.
5 hour hike to the top, this is NOT AN EASY HIKE, but well worth the effort. The best part is the "ride" down.
The view and the hiking are extraordinary! The feeling of being on top of the most active volcano in Chile is astonishing, as well. I won't give it five stars for two reasons, mostly: first, it's a lot more tiring than the tourism companies will admmit, and you have to be really prepared fisically; second, there are so many people going up you don't enjoy properly the location. The butskiing in the end is great, but while light people can't gain any speed, heavy ones can't stop properly.Well, it's really great, after all, but don't expect to get up there in one piece, if you're not used to it.
We made a different trail on the Mount Villarica. Instead of climbing the mountain we went with a guide trough the forest to the low craters. It's very nice but needs preparation. Ask for it when you're on this site.Great place, amazing view, must go.
Excelent trip. You dont have to be an expert climbing mountains to take this trip. People of all ages made it to the top. It was my first time and it was incredible. You just need a good cardio and the will to make it.
I hadn´t done any kind of ice climbing before this so it was definitely tough! Personally I didn´t enjoy the climb itself but the views of the surrounding area was lovely, and sliding back down was definitely the highlight. If you´re in Pucon and in good shape I´d recommend it but bring a large bottle of water and be prepared to work!
A great day!An early start with the drive to the base. We chose to take the chairlift - a rip-off at £10 but there you go. You could certainly walk up but it would add a fair bit to the day.The climb itself was surprisingly un-challenging (it was perfect weather the day we climbed). We found the pace surprisingly slow and more like a long walk in the snow than a climb. Scottish Munros are considerably harder to climb. The crater and the view make the cost and the climb worth it and the bonus is the slide back down. Unforgettable.
If you are in the center of chili, you need to stop in Pucon ad go climb the volcano. Even the view of the volcano from de city is worth it. You can either climb the full volcano or do the first part (most difficult part) with the chairlift for an extra cost. Walking on the snow and looking at the view is great. But my favorite part was sliding down the volcano! What an experience!
If you make it all the way up you get 2 extras:1) you get to look into the rim2) you get to slide your way back down - lots of Adrenalin here :)
