I climbed the gorge travel to the summit and it was very hard going in a very fun sort of way, often using hands to scramble up! Started off at 6am and made it up and back in 5hrs. Veiw from the top is just staggering :)

A mountain of contrasts. The drive around the base is about 50 km's and each bit has a beauty of its own. Lots of short easy walks and quite a few Medium to difficult ones. The summit walk is about 6 hours return.Do not miss Cattle pool...a billabong of beauty with heaps of birdlife. Mt Augustus is apparently the biggest rock in the world-hard to fathom this-with large chunks of weathered rock chipping off it tomake it look like many-plus it's treed so hard to see the one rock! But it's got a fantastic 49k road circling it with side roads into various aboriginal rock art sites, water holes, lookouts and serious walks to the summit. It's a long way from anywhere and not for the foolish or fainthearted to visit-we passed one vehicle in 4.5 hours of driving, and on another day drove 15ks to buy petrol for another who'd run out on the road. Ask management at the tourist park plenty of questions before you go.
