The nature in Cathedral Ranges is stunning and even if some of the hikes are a little tough if you are an average Joe it is very much worth the effort! There are a lot of choices of trails, of different length and difficulty. So there definitely something for everyone. We did the hike up the little Cathedral and Cathedral Peak this time around. It was fairly step, which is quite tough for me, since I am quite out of shape when it come to cardio and it also tough on the knees on the way down. But manageable and still enjoyable. It took us about 5 hours to get back to the car at Ned's Parking, that included a lunch break and a bunch of smaller breaks on the way to catch the breath again. When it comes to facilities there are not many so come prepared! There are a bunch of parkings and most of them have a toilet facility. But that is about it. There is no place to refill water bottles, so make sure to bring all the water you need. All and all, a great place to do a day-trip out of Melbourne to. Or stay longer if that is your thing. The forest is absolutely beautiful and so is the view from the top! We will for sure come back another time to do another trail.
I went to here with my friends for an overnight weekend camping trip.It is only two hours deice from Melbourne. The drive itself is really pretty and varied. We drove through little towns, vineyards, farmland and through windy roads with tall trees. You can always do a stopover at Haelsville of Marysville for a wander or coffee or lunch. Few good second hand shops along the way as well.I would highly recommend getting there early and starting with Sugarloaf peak. It does require a certain level of fitness to do this summit. There are two route to the too a medium one and a very hard one. We took the very hard one to the top and absolutely loved it. Then we took the medium one when coming down. The very hard route is pretty much rock climbing all the way without any ropes! Its hard, testing but fun and worth it. Don't try it if you are scared of heights. Also keep in find that some bits are very narrow and requires you to go flat against the wall and squeeze your way through. It took us an hour to get to the top. Don't do it if its raining!Once on the top, the view is beautiful. Coming down the medium way is easy with minimal rocks on the way. About 45 min.Highly recommend camping at Ned's gully. Its a beautiful campsite with a little river running nearby. Lots of trees and a fire pit for each camping spot. However, do remember that you will need take to your own firewood. Its prohibited to use wood from the forest or river. The next day we did the Cathedral Peak, access via Ned's gully. Took us 2 hours to get to the summit. Its medium difficult. You are pretty much ascending slowly through the forest. Once again, the view from the too is just stunning. There are plenty of other short walks you can do or intense ones a that takes all day.If walking is not your thing, just enjoy camping by the river and watch the stars in the night.Do take good shoes; wet weather gear and a set of warm clothes as nights and mornings are cold.
Just had the most wonderful experience walking, climbing and navigating from Neds Gully to Little Cathedral then to Cathedral Peak up over the Ridge down to Jawbone Creek, to Cooks Mill back to Neds Gully took 8.5hrs. Such a beautiful day. Just remember to take plenty of water and snacks, can be hard going.
The walks in this State Park are fantastic. There are so many, it's hard to choose a favourite. The best access is to take the turnoff into the park from the north - nearest to Cathedral Peak. The road starts off well, but after the camping ground at Cook's Mill it becomes much rougher and steeper, but still okay for cars. The Cathedral Peak walk is great - there is a walk to the Farmyard and a great walk along the Ridgeback to Sugarloaf Peak. For those who are agile, you will have some fun going up the Well's Cave track to Sugarloaf Peak - you will need to squeeze through the cave, it's dark for a tiny way and very cramped (broad shoulders may struggle), but fun all the same. There's not much water along the paths, so take your own supply. A nice place to lunch at the top of Sugarloaf Peak and also at the Farmyard. I love the walks - I've been many times. It's great to stay either in Taggerty or Marysville and make a weekend of it, then you can try a few walks.
