We were impressed by the obvious care and passion that has gone into establishing this attraction. It houses shed (after shed) of artifacts from the NSW gold rush (particularly from nearby Hill End). We were amazed at the size and variety of the collection: rooms full of porcelain dishes, a uranium ceramic collection, mining equipment, Chinese and immigrant artifacts, weapons, medical equipment, homewares, everything. There is also an underground mine that you can walk through: viewing more artifacts and then climbing more than 100 meters of ladders to the top again. We found this better and more insightful than the visitor centre in Hills End, and would recommend it for (1) anyone passing through and wanting to learn about the area's mining history; (2) school groups or groups with children, as they've also set-up many educational centres throughout the exhibit. All this for a $10 price tag: unexpected and worthwhile.

A must see in Hill End. This is about 2km before Hill End on the right when you come in on the road from Bathurst. (And yes it is on a hill so you shouldn't miss it!) The museum covers a huge area (possibly several acres) and as well as the museum there is an underground mine dug by hand by the owner and his wife that you can visit. There is a tremendous number of artefacts from the gold rush times in Hill End, including plenty of relics from the Chinese miners who flocked to the area. The buildings have that authentic feel being built from bush timber and corrugated iron. With luck, you may also see a sheep shearing demonstration.
