We followed the signs to the historic church and found an interesting attraction. The historical display in the old school master's house was the highlight; we learned a lot about the history of the area. The church itself and graveyard were also worth a look.
Situated an easy 20 minute country drive from historic Windsor, Ebenezer is a remote and tiny colonial settlement situated on the banks of the Hawkesbury River. After you've taken in the history, Sunday markets and restaurants of Windsor, take this peaceful drive to what is really now only a small beautifully maintained church and pioneer graveyard, with an historic cottage to look through, with a grapevine covered terrace overlooking the flowing Hawkesbury, where the guild ladies will serve the best Devonshire Tea to tempt, relax and make you welcome. The Presbyterian Church is the oldest in Australia and has many First Fleet families and convicts who made their lives in this early farming district, buried in its surrounding gardens. A typically colonial environment that celebrates our early history, better than reading a book or internetting. The church is small and quaint, well cared for and an active centre for the local church parishioners. You can park there and take a walk along the Hawkesbury, feeling the remoteness of the area ..truly relaxing and a super easy Sunday drive.
You wouldn't think you would find a busy little cafe among the well maintained grave would you? We were pleasantly surprised. The place is peaceful, quite and well maintained. Do drop in and experience the beauty of this church and graveyard.
Oldest church in Australia, beautiful tranquil setting for a Devonshire tea overlooking lawn and the Hawkesbury river. Volunteer serving in the cafe there was very knowledgeable of the church and the general area.
