Lion rock
After a 30 hour flight from NYC to Auckland, our host/ my sister thought it was necessary to let it all wash away on the shores of Piha Beach. I have never seen a black sand beach in my life which is possibly why seeing Piha had such a lasting effect on me. Aside from the obviously dramatic and stunning BLACK SAND which kisses a turquoise sky, and is lapped by crystal clear water, the drive from Auckland is equally as breathtaking if not a bit treacherous; and I write treacherous in the most exciting way possible. I don't want to give it all away, but the drive along the rocky shoreline, on narrow winding paths with views of Piha Beach below is absolutely awe-inspiring. The water itself is perfect for everyone from sunbathers to thrill seeking surfers, lone backpackers who need a moment of contemplation, and families with children who will be fascinated that the sand is BLACK!!!My recommendation would be to pack a chilly bin with ice cold bevies and sandwiches, some towels, a surf board or two, and lots of sunblock! There is a small convenience store about 15 minute walk from the shore line with awesome icecream bars and pies.As we sat on the beach with a book and a smile completely alone (we had the whole beach to ourselves!!) we were quickly inundated with a crowd of about 300 people, all carrying flowers and surfboards. We realized that it was a memorial service for a fallen lifeguard and we watched a beautifully touching ceremony as hundreds of roses were thrown in to the surf, and women and men climbed aboard their surfboards and raised paddles to the sky in a sign of solidarity. If anything this was completely apropos, and a perfect way to describe Piha Beach. Beautiful, dramatic, thought provoking, spiritual, and cathartic.
We visited on a cloudy, overcast day and it didn't detract in any way from the beauty of this special place. The charming town of Piha is situated on the coast, surrounded by mountains. The drive from Henderson to this gorgeous beach includes stunning views along a winding road through the Henderson Valley. There are a few lovely little cafes to grab a bite here so its easy to plan to spend a day here or just a few hours after spending time on the nearby trails. The beach is of soft, powdery, black, volcanic sand, even though the sun wasn't bright, the sand was warm. We were lucky enough to catch some pretty incredible surfing here today after hiking nearby.
We were only passing through and decided to stay for a couple of days. Beautiful Beach, swim with caution as the rip tides are very dangerous here. The sand also get very hot! Hike Lion Rock and near by bush walks, and a beautiful waterfall nearby. The cafe has great fish and chips. Stayed in a rental property nearby for a couple of days but would have loved to stay there for a couple more.
lovely surf beach on Aucklands west coast. Only a short drive from the western suburbs through native bushland. The black sand nice n warm and fabulous views from the top. Take a walk up lion rock. Get a surf lesson or just walk on the lovely stretch of sand. dine at the rsa over looking the water. Camp site right there also
Awesome scenery on downward approach road to beach and a fantastic beach both sides of the Lion rock . Great surfing waves with stunning surroundings . The fish and chips at the beach cafe are easily the best i've tasted in NZ . Check it all out as you won't be disappointed .
Stunning beach with excellent waves for amateur surfing and swimming. I stayed in the water for hours, having a heck of a day. Highly recommended.
This is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It is so picturesque! It is a bit of a drive from Auckland, but the roads are exciting to drive (if not a little wild at points) and the final view when you look down on this gem is worth every second it takes to get to. The swimming can be dangerous, but they have a solid lifeguard staff. The surfing is tremendous! This is a must see for anyone visiting this area who wants to see what a beach in NZ can be like.
One of the best beaches around auckland. I visited this beach when i was on honeymoon with my husband. You will fallen in love with this beach.
Surfing, bush walks, good body surfing, and great Lifeguards :) . probably my favourite beach in Auckland.
Just 40 minutes west of Auckland is New Zealand's iconic surf beach. With Lion Rock separating North Piha from Piha Beach and black sand it's famous for swimming, surfing and exploring the backdrop of native NZ bush.
A perfect place for Smurfers!Quite dangerous to swim!A beautiful view at sunset from the hills.Must visit place in North Island.
Beautiful beach with black sand, Lion Rock in the Waitakere Ranges (west of Auckland). Beside the beach the Waitakere park offers many nice hiking trails. Easily spending days here.
