One part of the loop goes a long way through wood and brush but the left side has better scenery and is shorter.
Lovely woodlands wrapped by ocean made for a wonderful hike! We were fortunate to be here on a sunny day when a warm wind and few people allowed us to experience a kind of peace that's hard to find 'nowadays'.
This isn't a walk; it's a hike. Some of it is a bit difficult due to the rocky path and some rather difficult short uphills. But overall, probably should be considered a moderate hike. Easy to find and follow. Very nice ending with some good views. One of the best hikes we did on our trip.
The Middle Head trail is an easy 2 1/2 mile trail along the cliffs of the peninsula. The trail head can be easily found near the cottages of the Keltic Lodge. Be sure to do the entire loop of this trail. The views from the cliffs are beautiful and it's not uncommon to see bald eagles along the way.
Not only in books or on television. We were able to observe Bald Eagles several time on the narrow land on the ocean.Great!
For the most part this trail is very well maintained and traveled as visitors to the Keltic Lodge use it. There are two downhill/uphill grades which would be difficult for persons that find climbing stairs difficult, therefore, I would be inclined(no pun intended) to rate it as a 2.
The Middle Head Trail hike offers a fairly easy opportunity to see amazingly beautiful views and take many photos. We visited on a windy day and found the "northern-most" loop of the trail to be the best place to be because it was sheltered from the wind. This seems to be a good hike for children.
With a trailhead right beside the Keltic Lodge this is easy to access and a moderate hike. Some elevation change but more or less not too bad. Just a few short sections that are fairly heavily rooted/rocky.
This hike is moderate in length and in difficulty. It goes through the woods most of the time but now and then you get a nice view of the coast and waterfront. Scenery at the end of the trail is on a rocky point that has expansive view of the water and Atlantic ocean.
Middle Head is a nice hike, but, the views are not quite as spectacular as some of the other hikes -- we particularly liked the hike at White Point for the views (not as long as Middle Head but spectacular views).
Breathtaking scenery on this trail! A MUST! Some incline & very rooty paths - lots of lookouts for some beautiful photo opportunities.
Don't miss this trail, near Keltic Lodge. Easy, 1-hour walk with beautiful views along the way and at the end.
This is a pleasant walk in the woods with some good views along the way and exceptional views at the end. If you're out of shape and don't do much walking, a couple of hills may require a rest stop. And some sections are "rooty". Its proximity to Keltic Lodge makes it the area's most popular trail, so if you seek solitude, look elsewhere. In late August there were still trailside wild raspberries! For a less crowded hike with views and history that surpass Middle Head, ask for directions to White Point, further up the Cabot Trail. You won't regret it.
This was our first hike in CBHNP and there were some great coastal views. There are some ups and downs in this trail, actually fairly steep in spots, and it is actually fairly rocky and rooty. Definitely would recommend hiking footwear. Bring your camera!
This little trail isn't hard, and the payoff is great. It feels like you are walking in a magical world, and the view you get at the end (Ingonish Island, Cape Smokey) is wonderful. Go, I promise you won't regret it!
