The place is very close to Achray Campground and definitely worth seeing. We visited it, driving back home from the park. The trail is pretty short. So in our case, there was not much to do over there except taking photographs. But I believe a canoe trip down the Barron River will be a very interesting experience.
We visited the Canyon on a beautiful mid-week day at the end of October. Not a soul to be seen, except for the odd logging truck. Spectacular views, but a little bit terrifying if you're afraid of heights.(like me)
If your going to Algonquin Park you better make time for this spot. Its only a 1.5km hike round trip and well worth it! Beautiful view
A few years ago when staying at my Wife's uncles in Ontario, we decided to drive up here to view the canyon. The trail thru the woods, albeit the short section we did , was worth it. Giving spectacular views of the canyon and river below. We were not staying 'in the area', however if ever you are it is recommended. Judging by others' comments we were lucky and missed the mozzies :-)I've been trying to i.d who the canyon and river are named after. Can anyone help ?Thanks in Advance if you can.
We have been there 3 times and still planning to go again. After a moderated walk up the hill (be prepared for mosquitoes and flies on summer) you reach the Canyon and really have to say " wow!". TRy to go on a clear sunny day, otherwise it can be a bit foggy and you will miss the beauty of the canyon. Be careful with kids and dogs at the edge of the gorge. The Canyon is about 4-5 hours from the AlgonquinnWest gate on Hwy 60, about 7 hours from Toronto and about 4 hours from Ottawa.Best way to visit the Canyon is staying few days at Achray campground or at a Pembroke or Petawawa motel and drive about 2 h from there.
We had to RUN the full length of this magnificent trial, which has several spectacular views of the Barron Canyon and river from a great height. This was because all our deep woods insect repellent was not enough to defend us from the attentions of uncountable mosquitoes and biting flies in July. The run was great exercise, and we laugh about it now, but be prepared!Barron Canyon Trail is near the Achray Campground site and fairly deep inside Algonquin Park along a lousy gravel road that could sandblast the underside of your vehicle, trailer and recreational toys for you.But this is Algonquin Park, and this is what it is all about! Unforgettable!
This is a hidden gem for people visiting the area. The view from the trails above the canyon are absolutely spectacular and you can canoe down there as well. Be careful though and don't get too close to the edge, and watch out for logging trucks during the drive in.
Only one word needed - Stunning. A short 1.5km trail with great views of the canyon, together with a very interesting booklet that you can either buy or borrow.
