Visiting the fort is a good lesson on the history of the area. Scattered throughout the fort are performers in period costume who show visitors what they are doing and explain how things would have been back when the fort was constructed. The most interesting parts I found was the canoe building where a carpenter and his apprentice were rebuilding a long canoe and the fur pelt building. It's a good place to stop for a breather on a long trip. There is food and drinks available for purchase in one of the buildings if you find yourself in the need for them.I went to the fort on the beginning of my circle tour around Lake Superior and kept thinking of various items I saw in it and had heard from the presenters as I went around the lake.
We stopped by to sightsee but the were closed however we were invited in to watch a furtrade video and we were able to look around main building and take some beautiful pics.
Very interesting, exiting , great for family outing , informative , educational, great atmosphere of the old fur trade time . Great costumes . Corteus staff . Excellent food from the "Cantina" A must see , and experience ...
has everything, there is a large site so a fair bit of walking, but lots to see and do. will need stroller for little one.
This year with a giant maze, the sugar shack and the helicopter ride over Kakabeka Falls and the Kam River, a wonderful family week-end!!
It is a living breathing vibrant interactive museum and experience.Everyone is in Character ... AmazingThis is one of the places that I tell people about when conversation comes around to interesting things found on ones travelsThe date of "when I was there" isn't accurate as it was year before but presume based on what I read from other reviews ... it hasn't changed.
I grew up in Fort William (Thunder Bay) in West Fort! I am now married and living in the US. Went visiting family in Thunder Bay we have gone to Old Fort William several times! It is always a fun experience! We have nothing like this where I live now! The interpreters are always fun and informative and some have been working there for many years! Having traveled all over the world, Old Fort William is one of the best and true to historic parks anywhere. I believe the original real actual fort was down near the old coal works on Lake Superior! :)
I visited Fort William Historical Park on one of my trips to Thunder Bay and was greatly surprised at the park. The costumed historical interpreters were great. They take on a period persona and attempt to get you to enter their exciting world. The interactive walk through out the fort makes it both informative and fun. Anyone visiting Thunder Bay should take time to visit the fort.
We attended the sold out show on Saturday the 13th of December and enjoyed every second of the Christmas Carol!Great Performance Rogue Productions!Great Venue FWHP!Margit Walmark
A family adventure! Great for all ages..the staff were all fantastic and knew their history and were able to answer our questions without hesitation..the children enjoyed the animals immensely! Defininately worth seeing..was stepping into the past!
Expect to spend 1/2 a day at this historic recreation. A historic recreation is top notch. Also check out the Grand Portage Monument on the American side of the border, at Grand Portage Casino, where Old Fort William Stood before moving to the Canadian side of the border.
I grew up in Thunder Bay and still to this day when I come back home to visit I'm still very impressed.
Haunted fort night was great as always! It is a must go every year! The atmosphere is nice and it puts you in a different world and a different time. The story is always great. from past experience the fort is also nice to visit for its vast history and seeing all the cool things.
We spent a couple of hours touring the fort. The interpreters are very friendly and good at their job. They provide a lot of information on the fort and how it was used.
Took the kids (1& 31/2) to the Fort this weekend to attend their annual Kids Halloween Hoot. I strongly recommend attending this event!!! $5 admission for adults and the kids were free as they were under 5. Caught a shuttle from the main visitors centre down to the grounds where the historical buildings are located. Different stations were set up throughout the grounds. Each station had a child friendly activity to do, such as a maze, crafts, story telling etc. After the completion of each activity a toy or treat was given to the child. Some activities received a stamp on a scavenger hunt card. After completing all the activities you handed over your card for yet another treat! A coupon was also given to each child for a free kids meal at Boston Pizza. The staff was friendly and great with the kids. The activities were Halloween themed but definitely not too scary for the kids. What a great time with the kids and an EXCELLENT value for the money. All in all a wonderful afternoon with the kids. Can't wait for next year. The Fort also does a Haunted walk at night for the adults. We didn't get there this year but look forward to getting tickets for next year.
