You can't miss this stop as you pass through Barry's bay as it's right along the main road; it's worth a quick stop and look. An interesting piece of Canadian History. Barry's Bay has a quaint downtown area with some shops and the Zurakowski park offers a shaded gazebo with a picnic table for a nice break after viewing the informative signs. It's a quick visit as there are just a few signs with some information, a statue and a model of the avro arrow. It's fantastic that the community has embraced this pilot who retired near the community.
I recommend a quick stop at Zurakowski Park for anyone interested in significant Canadian history. However, it is a very small 'park' and a 10-15 min. visit is probably adequate. There is a nice gazebo to have lunch in, a statue, a model of the Avril Arrow and some informative billboards but that's about it. Best to build a visit there around other things of interest in Barry's Bay such as the railway station/tourist info centre, restaurants and coffee shops and interesting stores such as Grumblin' Granny's and The Vintage Shop.
Impressive what the community had done for this citizen. It is like a landmark an attracts the attention of the travellers.
Interesting little park to visit while strolling along the main street in Barry's Bay. Lots of detail about the Avro Aero and Zurakowsi (it's test pilot). Cool model of the Avro Aero too. Not a place I'd make a special trip to see, but interesting enough if you're there anyway. A neat little piece of Canadian history.
This is a must see if you are in the Barry’s Bay area. I was amazed that I hadn’t heard history behind this pilot. Anyone who thought they knew about the Avro Aero should visit this site.
