north shore shell museum

The decor is very funky--mobiles and windchimes made of shells and recycled materials as well as painted boards with sayings by old timers that the self-taught artist Egberth compiles and scribes. Playing the washtub bass in an impromptu band with other customers was very fun. There are loads of instruments to be passed around. Egberth, the proprietor, is very friendly and happy to share stories of the island. My mango smoothie (smoody) was very fresh--made from mangoes Egberth had picked off the tree that morning. Other fresh items include pancakes (mango, guava, coconut, banana), fish, and LOBSTER! The restaurant upstairs is breezy and lovely while the art "museum" is teeming with shells, signs, and sayings.

Well, pop in to this little place in Carrot Bay, and see all the shells, wish we had those on our British beaches. You can hear the sea in them, of course. Lots of shells, shell craft, traditional wooden boats and other example of local craft. No mermaids though. :(

My son has done this dive twice with Dive BVI and Sail Caribbean and my husband has been once and they both enjoyed it very much. The dive boat personnel both times were exceptional and the interesting historical details enhanced the experience. Great place to take underwater photos and videos. A chunk of history in addition to the pretty fish and surroundings.

Egbet is a wonderful person and a fantastic host. He owns and restores the museum with children from the island. He teaches them valuable skills which they can use to find employment later in life. When my girlfriend and I stopped by to check out the museum we were the only ones there. Egbert immediately dropped everything and began to tell us all about the museum. He was even so kind as to make just the two of us a wonderful meal. It was the best meal I had during my 12 day stay in the Virgin Islands. Following the meal we "struck the band" where Egbert played a guitar and sang a great song while my girlfriend and I joined in! Truly an unforgettable experience!

We stopped by one morning based on other tripadvisor reviews. We loved it, something totally unlike your polished tourist trap! It's an eclectic collection of all sorts of things either created from shells, or bits of flotsam from beachcombing, and just bric-a-brac (a large collection of teacups, for example!). Donations are welcome (or purchases of basic windchimes etc made by local children) and we felt happy to give something based on the wonderful main man's stories and efforts to involve local kids, and give them things to do. An old boat which they are renovating will take a good bit more work though!We had a fresh mango juice each which was spectacularly good, and looked around at all the other fruits he grows on site. I would definitely have eaten here for lunch or dinner if we'd had just a little more time. I reckon it would have been delicious.Overall one of those memorable moments in our trip.

Weird is good. We walked from Sebastians. It was about a 20 minute walk & worth it despite the sunburn. It was nice to get out and walk. It's just a very bizarre thing to see. We called to make reservations for lunch but got an answering machine. We left a message saying we hoped he was cooking & we'd be there around 1:30. We weren't planning on walking at that time so by the time we arrived it was after 2:00 and no one was around. You could still go in & check the place out,though.

It was of season and we were the only people in this funky restaurant. The owner was incredibly kind and the food was great. Local fish and the largest lobster ever (3 lbs), roasted breadfruit from the tree outside, fresh coconut water right out of the husk (!) with a straw. A great local experience. Unexpected find.

Spent a day driving the north side of the island, which included a mini-tour of this shell "museum", a stop at the Callwood Distillery and the eco, glass-blowing stand at Myetts. The shell museum has a restaurant atop that was not open during our visit but we enjoyed our visit with the owner of this property. Would return to try the restaurant for dinner during lobster season.

nothing much there, but not too sorry we went on a dull day with nothig else to do, so were trying to kill some time, would not go again

You will be amazed by the quantity and types of shells. Don't need to spend much time there, but worth stopping if you're on that side of Tortola.

Worth a quick visit and photo shoot. Pretty amazing little bar with shells covering every inch in some very clever designs. Not very friendly staff, however...as with most of the BVIs.

Not much to see there. Might have been interesting a long time ago. Neglected now though.

This place is a treasure! If you understand outsider art, you must go here. The signs are painted with coconut fronds. They are fabulous. The shells have been collected over many years by a man who loves collecting. He has created a restaurant on the upper level that looks as neat and clean as anything we saw on the island. Please patronize this place. It is way more interesting than Bomba Shack. In addition, he creates swim boats that teach kids to swim by following the tiny boats in the water. He deserves to be honored for his effort.

Note it is in Carrot Bay, not Road Town. Yes this place looks a bit different. The description of the piles of shells and comment signs is accurate. However, it's just quirky, not frightening!Try and eat here if you can, the owner is a lovely man who cooks a great local lunch and is happy to chat about the way the BVI used to be. He also puts lots of time and effort into teaching local children about their heritage. This is the only place we found that sells good home cooking (and at a very reasonable price).Please try it and don't be put off by the review of someone who only looked at it from the outside and lept to some incorrect conclusions.

This is place is a dump. When I hear museum, I expect to see an exibition listing scientific information. My wife and I got here in the middle of the afternoon. The place was deserted. There were piles of shells of what seemed like the leftovers from the kitchen of various restaurants. They were located in the lower story of a house that has a restaurant on the second floor. There was no caretaker or anyone in the area. There were no signs saying, closed, etc. The way there was writing on the walls made this look like something out of a horror movie. We did not feel safe while we waited for a taxi to come rescue us. I deffinitely could not believe that this is listed as an attraction. We visited in June 2003
