Beautiful square! A lot of historical sites nearby (walking distance). Top location in Santo Domingo. Very beautiful.
Lovely setting but certainly not pristine--would have liked more clean up of trash and trimming of bushes. a little unkept but certainly well used.
Parque Colon, in front of La Catedral Primada de America. place for Artist , Writer, and old people . Tourist like this place because its in the center the Colonial City. I like so much . I don't like the people to give money from you.
We spent a long time sitting on a bench in the sun watching school groups, vendors, tourists, and some locals. Really great place to waste an hour or so.
I sat there for a while, and enjoyed a bottle of water. Nice place to spend a few minutes and rest. Beware of the many people trying to sell you things.
This is where you'll find the European Crowd mixing with the locals. Sit in a cafe to have a beer or wine. Not too expensive either. Hotel Conde de Peñalba restaurant on the corner seems the best place & great be.
Musicians walk around and play the accordion or drum, or violin, vendors sell ice cream, people relax on the many park benches. Slow down and enjoy a difference pace. Then you'll understand why you see so many of the people smiling.
It's not really that big of a park. It's more like a green square with a few trees (but two really old ones they are massive!). There are lots of great restaurants around. Good place to stay and eat after a long day walking around the colonial zone. However, there was when we went there was a guy with a mic and speakers saying something in Spanish the whole night (sounded like he was inviting people to believe in god or something )
We took Calle el Conde to Parque Colon where we are met with a huge statue of Christopher Columbus pointing to something off in the distance. Here we hung out allowing the entire group to get back together with each other. On the edges of the park stood loads of vendors waiting to sell you various wares. The best part about this was that you could haggle and if you didn't like what one person offered, you simply turned and tried to make a deal with a dozen others.
A melting pot of local and tourists the evening we were there.Missed the fireworks on the Friday evening, but enjoyed the restaurants and the locals enjoying the giant Coca-Cola Christmas tree and Santa house.
