Not for the casual camper. This place is absolutely gorgeous! This is unspoiled Panama at it's very best.
You are right in that the Cerro Hoya National Park is in fact a beautiful place to go but let's make some clairifications.1) The Park can be entered from a number of locations in cluding the Los Buzos / Cambutal side. There is also a park office in Cambutal.2) This is a LONG distance from Chitre and I can't imagine why anyone would post it under Chitre.....a 3.5 hr. drive does not qualify as close unless your going to the moon.3) It is possible to do day trips into the park but you will not get to see the true beauty and splender of the over 80,000 hectare (200,000 acre +/-) park. The best way is to take your camping gear by horseback or boat. These can be arranged at Los Buzos. 4) Camping in the park is beeautiful but you need to understand that this is camping in the true sence of the word. No electric, no tap water, no 7-11 down the street, no emergency clinic nearby, cell phones don't work - out of range, etc.....for those of us who love this stuff and don't mind the adventures that others might call hardships it is absolutly great. Camping beside a waterfall, bath in the pool at the bottom of the falls, walking a deserted beach at low tide and seeing all of the critters who decided to stay in the tidal pools, seeing the Painted Canary....you won't see this guy any where else and very few people have actual photos of this bird unless you have been to Cerro Hoya...the list goes on and on.Truly a naturist, birder, adventurers paradise. We will be making another trip soon and will pass on more info after the next trip.
Parque Nacional Cerro Hoya (Cerro Hoya National Park) is on the southern tip of the Azuero Peninsula in Panama. The area is full of jungle, teak farms, dramatic mountains falling into the 'Tuna Coast' of the Pacific Ocean. Jaguars, the endangered Green Macaw small white-tailed deer, and many other mammals and birds that would please mammal lovers and ornithologists alike. The area covers a large area on the southwest part of the Azuero Peninsula or 'the heart of Panama.' There are several places you get can get information, but the best place is the ANAM office and the actual Cerro Hoya Park Station in Arenas, Mariato region, Veraguas province, Panama. tanager Tourism, north of Malena, can arrange a tour for you that consists of birding or plant collecting. Jake and Alli, two expats in Torio, can also arrange tours through the Park Service. They own a local business. All of these choices are great due to their effort and communication. This park is not in the Chitre city of the eastern Azuero. Hiking here can be unexpected as the weather can change from the top of the mountains to the seaside. Be prepared for rain and warm, humid weather to a very dry heat located in areas.
